Transforming Disability into Skill and Self-Reliance

The Bundelkhand Society for Rural Development in Mahoba is redefining disability, turning it from a perceived weakness into a source of skill and self-reliance. For the past decade, the organization has been instrumental in integrating individuals with mental, physical, hearing, and speech impairments, as well as those affected by cerebral palsy, into the mainstream by providing them with vocational training.

Through this unique initiative, students with disabilities are creating attractive, eco-friendly religious idols and incense sticks using cow dung and flowers collected from temples. This endeavor is significantly improving their lives.

Eco-Friendly Creations from Natural Resources

At the institution, students are crafting beautiful idols of Ram Darbar, Lakshmi-Ganesh, Radha-Krishna, and Shiva, along with souvenirs. They achieve this by mixing cow dung with tamarind seeds, flour, wood powder, and multani mitti (fuller's earth). These products are entirely organic and environmentally friendly.

Furthermore, incense sticks are being manufactured by repurposing flowers offered at temples. The incense sticks utilize a mixture of cow dung, flower powder, camphor, loban (benzoin resin), and coconut oil. When burned, these sticks offer a pleasant fragrance and also help reduce environmental pollution.

Environmental Protection and Self-Sufficiency

This initiative not only propels individuals with disabilities towards self-reliance but also sends a strong message to society about environmental conservation. Under the skilled guidance of the institution's manager, Akash Rai, and special educator Deep Shikha, students such as Shalini Prajapati, Preeti Prajapati, Indresh Yadav, Dinesh Kushwaha, Lovely Anuragi, Divya Anuragi, Manoj Prajapati, Shikha Chaurasia, Akhilesh Raikwar, Usha Raikwar, Bablu, Ashish, and Shyam Bihari are acquiring various skills.

The coloring of the idols is overseen by Ujjwal Katchoria, while Devendra Prajapati assists in the production process. After drying, the finished products undergo crucial stages of coloring, packing, and gel filling. This entire process not only teaches disabled students a new skill but also helps them become financially independent and self-sufficient.

The institution's efforts represent a positive step towards changing societal attitudes towards people with disabilities and providing them with equal opportunities.
