Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension and a fine of 255 euros (£215) by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The sanction follows his departure from the country's international camp in September.

The 41-year-old captain's decision to leave the squad occurred after he was an unused substitute in a match against Norway and subsequently learned he would not start against Denmark on October 1. Ronaldo cited a significant breach of trust by Portugal coach Jorge Jesus in a detailed statement explaining his actions.

Reasons for Suspension

Ronaldo stated that coach Jorge Jesus had twice "broke his word," describing it as an "absolute breach of trust." This led to his premature exit from the national team setup.

The suspension, which commenced on the day of the Denmark match, means that 19 days have already been served. Consequently, Ronaldo will not miss any upcoming Portugal fixtures.

FPF's Decision and Ronaldo's Defence

The FPF disciplinary committee acknowledged "the remorse shown" by Ronaldo in his statement. They also took into account his "contributions to soccer and recognition for athletic merit."

As part of his defence, Ronaldo submitted his CV, detailing his numerous awards and achievements. He also referred the committee to his earlier statement, where he accepted responsibility, apologised to teammates and fans, and admitted he deserved to be punished.

Coach's Stance and Future Prospects

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has denied making any prior agreement with Ronaldo. However, he has indicated that the door remains open for the star forward's potential return to the national team.

Pedro Proenca, president of the FPF, expressed a "strong desire" to see Ronaldo back with the national squad once the current matter is fully resolved.

Ronaldo's Record and Career

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner holds the men's world records for most goals (146) and appearances (234) for Portugal. His contributions have been instrumental in Portugal's triumphs, including the Euro 2016 championship and two Nations League titles.

In December 2022, Ronaldo joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, reportedly on an annual salary of £177 million. He has since signed a contract extension with the club.
