The Cliff News | 5 October 2026

A 28-year-old laboratory technician has died from pneumonic plague in Shelekhov, a town in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, Russia. The incident has led to hundreds of people being quarantined and has resulted in the closure of at least five hospitals.

The deceased technician has been identified as Darya Shipilova. She reportedly contracted the highly infectious and potentially fatal pneumonic plague while working at the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov. Local media reports suggest the infection may have occurred after she accidentally broke a test tube containing live bacteria.

A Tragic Accident at the Institute

According to reports, Shipilova informed medical staff that the incident happened while she was collecting samples for testing. She was admitted to a hospital on September 29 with severe pneumonia symptoms in Shelekhov. She was subsequently placed on a ventilator and tragically passed away on October 1.

The Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov has a long-standing history, having been founded in 1934. It operates as a scientific body dedicated to controlling plague and related infectious diseases.

Quarantine and Public Health Measures

In the wake of Shipilova's death, public health officials have taken swift action. Over 200 individuals who may have come into contact with the technician have been placed under quarantine. This precautionary measure aims to prevent any potential further spread of the deadly disease.

Public gatherings have also reportedly been cancelled across the Irkutsk region as authorities work to contain the situation. The governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, initially addressed the emerging situation, calling it a suspected case of a "particularly dangerous infection" and urging the public to remain calm.

Official Statements and Investigations

Governor Kobzev later updated the public on Sunday, stating that the case was initially identified as pneumonia of unknown etiology. He clarified via Telegram that "Microorganisms associated with her professional activities were not detected in the patient's samples." He also reported that, at that time, no other employees of the institute had shown symptoms of infectious disease.

The governor's statements indicate a degree of uncertainty surrounding the exact transmission route and the precise nature of the detected microorganisms. However, the official classification of the death as plague-related by local health authorities has triggered the stringent quarantine and isolation protocols now in effect.

Pneumonic Plague: A Serious Threat

Pneumonic plague is a severe form of plague that affects the lungs. It is highly contagious and can spread through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Without prompt and appropriate medical treatment, it can be rapidly fatal. The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with working with highly pathogenic bacteria in research environments.

The swift implementation of quarantine measures and the closure of hospitals underscore the seriousness with which public health authorities are treating this outbreak. The focus remains on identifying all potential contacts and ensuring they receive appropriate medical monitoring and, if necessary, prophylactic treatment.
