Former India cricketer and now commentator, Dinesh Karthik, believes that newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill may not fully comprehend the magnitude of leading the Indian team in the longest format. Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Tests, 25-year-old Gill is set to take on his first major assignment — a five-match Test series against England beginning June 20.
Speaking on the Podcast, Karthik cautioned that Gill is “walking into the lion’s den,” highlighting the historical difficulties visiting teams face when touring England. “I really don’t think he has realized the enormity of what it means to be a Test captain for India as of now. Coming to England is not easy — many star-studded teams have struggled here,” Karthik said.
Despite his concerns, Karthik pointed out that England’s current injury-hit bowling attack could work in India’s favour. With Mark Wood ruled out of the first three Tests, and Jofra Archer missing the opener, England’s pace arsenal is weakened. Gus Atkinson is also recovering from a hamstring strain, further compounding their woes.
Karthik added, “The England bowling attack is vulnerable — that’s the only positive I see for Gill right now. Their batting will definitely challenge India, but their bowling is still a work in progress, which could be a real opportunity for India.”
The upcoming series will be a significant test of leadership and temperament for Shubman Gill, as he leads a young Indian side in challenging English conditions.
