Lok Sabha Passes Key Taxation and Sports Bills Amid Opposition Protests

New Delhi — The Lok Sabha on Monday passed two major taxation Bills — the Income-Tax (No. 2) Bill and the Taxation Laws (Amendment) Bill — without debate, as Opposition members continued protests over the revision of Bihar’s electoral rolls and alleged electoral malpractices.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Bills when no Opposition members were present, as most had been detained during a march to the Election Commission headquarters. By the time they returned to the House, the Bills were passed by voice vote amid continued sloganeering in the Well.

The House also cleared the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025. These were introduced in the Opposition’s absence, with only two members speaking in support before they too were passed by voice vote.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the sports governance Bill was a “crucial step” toward creating a robust, transparent, and accountable sports ecosystem as India prepares to bid for the Olympics.

Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla accused the Opposition of “systematically disrupting” proceedings for 14 consecutive days, calling it a violation of parliamentary rules and the democratic process.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the repeated disruptions, saying the government would push ahead with passing priority legislation in both Houses. “Every day, we will not allow the country’s and Parliament’s time to be wasted on one issue,” he said, listing the taxation Bills, sports governance Bill, Merchant Shipping Bill, and the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill among the government’s priorities.
