Bhopal to Get ₹582-Crore Water Supply Upgrade Under AMRUT 2.0

Bhopal’s water supply system is set for a major revamp with the launch of a ₹582-crore project under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme, aimed at expanding and modernising the city’s pipeline and storage network. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav will lay the foundation stone for the project on Thursday.

Key Features of the Project

  • 700 km of new pipelines across the city
  • 36 new overhead tanks for better storage and distribution
  • Four intake wells and four filtration pumping stations to strengthen supply
  • Provision for 30,000 new household water connections, benefitting around 450 gated colonies and several slum settlements

The expansion will also cover newly developing areas like Ratibad, Neelbad, Maliphedi, Hathaikheda, Bagli, Danish Hills, Guradi Ghat, Laharpur, and Arvind Vihar, ensuring equitable access to piped water.

Additional Civic Works

Alongside the water project, the Chief Minister will inaugurate other civic infrastructure initiatives worth ₹16.76 crore under BMC’s Mechanical Department, including:

  • Roads, drains, and culverts
  • Road crossings across multiple wards

The event will also see the distribution of compassionate appointment letters to families of deceased municipal employees, and honouring 10 sanitation workers for their contribution to Bhopal’s top national rank in Swachh Survekshan 2024.

Addressing Future Water Demand

Currently, Bhopal’s 25-lakh population consumes about 440 MLD (million litres per day) of water. By 2040, demand is projected to rise to 575 MLD, leaving a gap of 135 MLD. The project is designed to bridge this gap and secure supply for the next 15 years.

Civic Preparedness

BMC Commissioner Harendra Narayan said all preparations for the launch are complete, and the initiative will significantly strengthen Bhopal’s urban infrastructure while supporting sustainable growth.
