At a joint press conference with President Donald Trump following bilateral talks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the issue of illegal immigration, stating that those staying unlawfully in other countries have no legal right to be there. Modi reiterated that India is willing to take back verified Indian citizens living illegally in the U.S.
He emphasized that many illegal immigrants are from ordinary families who are misled by human traffickers. Calling for a joint effort between India and the U.S. to dismantle the human trafficking ecosystem, Modi expressed confidence in Trump’s support in combating the issue.
The statement comes amid controversy over the recent deportation of over 100 Indians from the U.S. under strict conditions, prompting concerns raised in the Indian Parliament. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that India is engaging with U.S. authorities regarding the treatment of deportees.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Modi praised the role of the Indian-American community in fostering U.S.-India relations and announced the opening of two new Indian consulates in Los Angeles and Boston. He also invited American universities to establish offshore campuses in India to enhance educational ties.
Extradition of 26/11 Accused
Modi thanked Trump for approving the extradition of 26/11 Mumbai attack suspect Tahawwur Rana, underscoring India and America’s united front against terrorism. He reiterated the need for strong action against terrorism originating from across the border.
Indo-Pacific and Quad
Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to the Quad alliance, highlighting its role in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
