River Ranching Initiative Targets Aquatic Biodiversity

Under the ambitious 'River Ranching' scheme of the Uttar Pradesh government, one lakh fish fingerlings have been released into the Ramganga River at Chaubari Ghat in Bareilly. This special event, held on Friday, aims to revive fish populations in rivers and strengthen the aquatic ecosystem.

Dr. Raghavendra Sharma, MLA of Bithiri Chainpur, was the chief guest at the program. Gayatri Pandey, Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department, stated that this initiative is a significant step towards improving the river's biodiversity and water quality.

Pandey expressed concern over the declining fish species and affected reproductive capacities due to increasing pollution and human intervention in rivers. The initiative involves releasing fish seeds, prepared in hatcheries of the Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation, into major rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, Ramganga, Rapti, Ghaghra, Gandak, and Betwa.

The primary goal of this campaign is to increase the fish population in rivers and promote fisheries. Officials believe this will help secure the local aquatic life cycle and aid in maintaining natural balance.

The department clarified that such programs for the conservation of aquatic resources will continue across the state. This effort is a well-planned endeavor to re-establish fish populations and promote the overall health of the aquatic ecosystem.
