The Cliff News | 11 October 2026

YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was released from detention by the Crime Branch, Gurugram, in the early hours of Sunday, October 11, 2026. He had been detained from his residence in Gurugram's Sector 56 on Saturday, October 10, as authorities intensified security measures across the National Capital Region.

A spokesperson for the Gurugram police stated that no charges were formally pressed against Mr. Rathee. However, a police source indicated that he could be subject to renewed detention or further legal action if he attempts to proceed to Jantar Mantar amidst existing prohibitory orders.

Security Clampdown Amidst Protests

The detention of Mr. Rathee occurred as part of an extensive security operation aimed at preventing protesters from converging at Jantar Mantar. The demonstration was organized to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged irregularities related to the SIR.

Gurugram police stepped up security in and around the National Capital Region, leading to the temporary detention of Mr. Rathee and a significant number of other individuals. Sources within the police department reported that over 7,000 protesters were detained at various locations as part of an unprecedented security clampdown in Delhi.

Opposition Leaders Detained

The sweep also included the detention of several prominent opposition leaders. Former Chief Ministers, including Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan, and Manik Sarkar, were reportedly detained while attempting to join the planned demonstration.

Furthermore, CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Ashutosh Ranka, and Saurav Das were placed under preventive arrest following their detention at the airport. These actions highlight the widespread measures taken by authorities to control the flow of protesters and preempt potential disruptions.

Potential Legal Action

A senior police officer indicated that multiple First Information Reports (FIRs) are likely to be registered. These are expected to relate to alleged assaults on personnel that may have occurred during the ongoing protest activities. The focus remains on maintaining law and order while addressing the demonstrations.

The situation remains fluid, with authorities monitoring the broader anti-CEC protest updates scheduled for October 11, 2026. The warning issued to Mr. Rathee suggests that his movements will continue to be observed by law enforcement.
