Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by a Lucknow court on March 24 regarding his alleged defamatory remarks against the Indian Army during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2022, as per PTI reports. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Alok Verma has directed Gandhi to appear in court for the hearing.
The complaint was filed by lawyer Vivek Tiwari on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation with a rank equivalent to an army colonel. The case pertains to Gandhi’s comments on December 16, 2022, regarding the December 9, 2022, clash between Indian and Chinese troops, which the complainant claims were derogatory and defamed the military.
Another Defamation Case in Karnataka
Separately, Gandhi is also facing a defamation case over his 2018 remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the Karnataka assembly elections. On February 11, a special court heard the matter and scheduled the next hearing for February 24, where a witness will be cross-examined.
Despite multiple proceedings over the past five years, Gandhi had not appeared in court until December 2023, when a warrant was issued. He later complied with the summons in February 2024 and was granted bail. The Congress leader has denied the charges, claiming the cases are politically motivated.
