Vicky Kaushal’s historical action film Chhaava has taken a spectacular start at the box office, registering the biggest opening of 2025. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the Laxman Utekar directorial collected approximately ₹31 crore (nett) across all languages on its first day, according to trade tracker Sacnilk.
This makes Chhaava the highest opener of Vicky Kaushal’s career, surpassing Uri: The Surgical Strike (₹8.20 crore). The film has also outperformed Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force (₹15.30 crore), becoming the biggest opening-day grosser of the year so far. Additionally, it has broken the Gully Boy (2019) record for the highest Valentine’s Day collection by an Indian film, surpassing its ₹19.40 crore mark.
About the Film
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava is based on the life of Maratha king Sambhaji Maharaj, played by Vicky Kaushal. Rashmika Mandanna stars as Maharani Yesubai, with Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, Ashutosh Rana as Sarsenapati Hambirao Mohite, and Divya Dutta as Soyarabai. The film is adapted from the Marathi novel Chhava by Shivaji Sawant.
The music and score are composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Despite the strong box office numbers, Chhaava has received mixed reactions from critics, with some praising its grand scale and action while others criticized its editing and portrayal of Sambhaji as overly superhero-like.
With a record-breaking start, it remains to be seen how Chhaava performs over the weekend and whether it maintains its strong momentum.
