Kathmandu / Odisha – Days after the alleged suicide of Prakriti Lamsal, a 20-year-old Nepalese B.Tech student at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Odisha, tensions have escalated, leading to the return of 159 Nepali students via the Raxaul border, an official confirmed.
Students Allege Mistreatment
Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu, the returning students claimed they faced “inhuman treatment” at KIIT following Lamsal’s death.
- “We were abused, beaten by security guards in the presence of university staff, and forced to vacate the hostel,” they alleged.
- Despite assurances from the university administration, they stated that they did not feel safe to return.
The students have demanded a thorough investigation into Lamsal’s death and justice for those who faced alleged harassment.
Nepal Government Intervenes
Nepal’s Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba addressed the issue upon her return from Oman, stating that the Nepal government resolved the matter diplomatically.
- “We took the issue seriously and engaged with the Odisha government. A high-level investigation committee has now been formed,” she said.
- She also confirmed that Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj has ensured an impartial probe and a safe environment for Nepalese students.
Following diplomatic efforts, KIIT apologized for the incident and took action against staff members who allegedly mistreated Nepalese students.
Protests in Nepal for Justice
The incident has sparked protests in Nepal:
- A candlelight march was held in Birgunj, Parsa district, in memory of Prakriti Lamsal.
- Students in Bhairahawa, Rupandehi—Lamsal’s home district—organized a rally demanding justice.
With ongoing investigations, authorities in Odisha and Nepal continue to monitor the situation, ensuring a fair probe and the well-being of affected students.
