Renowned lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has weighed in on the growing controversy surrounding singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh’s Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3, which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. In a recent conversation with Creators Manch, Akhtar addressed the backlash and called for a more understanding approach from authorities.
When asked about the criticism Diljit has faced for starring alongside a Pakistani actress, Akhtar responded that he was unaware of when the film had been shot. Upon being informed that the movie was filmed before the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year, he said, “Ab kya karein bechara. The movie was shot earlier. Usko pata toh nahi tha ki aisa hoga.” Akhtar added that Indian investments were at stake, not Pakistani, and questioned the point of penalizing the project after its completion.
He further emphasized that Dosanjh couldn’t have anticipated such events. “Usko pehle pata hota yeh hone wala hain, toh woh thodi na leta Pakistani actress,” he said, suggesting that the government and censor board show some leniency. “They should say, don’t repeat this, but since the film was already made, it should be released. Lekin aage se nahi hona chahiye,” Akhtar concluded.
The Sardaar Ji 3 Controversy
Sardaar Ji 3, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Hania Aamir, released worldwide in theatres today, except in India. The controversy erupted shortly after the trailer dropped on June 22, revealing Hania Aamir’s role in the film. Since then, Dosanjh and the film’s makers have faced severe criticism from various film bodies and social media users.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) even issued a letter to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, urging him to sever ties with Dosanjh. Imtiaz is currently working with Dosanjh on an upcoming film scheduled for Baisakhi 2026, which also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, and Sharvari. In its statement, FWICE said, “Your involvement risks sending a deeply conflicting message, especially given your influence as a director known for socially resonant themes.”
The body further urged the Government of India to blacklist Diljit Dosanjh and the makers of Sardaar Ji 3, requesting that their passports be revoked and Indian citizenship cancelled. The controversy continues to escalate, with the industry divided on how to balance nationalism with artistic freedom.
