Following the attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a Jan Sunwai at her Civil Lines camp office on Wednesday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has ordered a major overhaul of her security arrangements.
Rekha Gupta, who earlier had Z-category protection provided by Delhi Police, will now receive joint Z-category cover from the CRPF, NSG, and Delhi Police.
Details of the Attack
- The attacker, Sakaria Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai from Rajkot, Gujarat, approached the CM pretending to be a petitioner.
- He slapped, pushed, and pulled her hair before being restrained by security personnel.
- He has been booked for attempted murder under Section 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
New Security Measures
- CRPF personnel will now be permanently stationed at Gupta’s residence, taking over duties from Delhi Police.
- The NSG will provide close protection in high-risk public events.
- During public hearings, direct access to the CM will no longer be allowed — all complaints will undergo prior verification before reaching her.
Investigation Updates
- Rajesh Khimji has been described by Delhi Police as a “serial offender” with multiple past cases in Gujarat, many ending in acquittals.
- His mobile phone is being forensically examined to trace contacts and communications.
- Police are probing whether he met anyone in Delhi before the attack and if a larger conspiracy is involved.
- Investigators may also take him to Rajkot during his five-day remand for further inquiries and possible crime-scene recreation.
This is the first major security breach involving Rekha Gupta since she assumed office as Delhi CM. The enhanced three-tier security cover reflects the Centre’s concerns over her safety in public interactions.
