Five Journalists Killed in Israeli Strike on Nasser Hospital in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on August 25, 2025, killed at least 20 people, including five journalists working for major international agencies such as Reuters, the Associated Press, and Al Jazeera. The journalists who lost their lives were identified as Hussam al-Masri, Mariam Abu Dagga, Moaz Abu Taha, Mohammed Salama, and Ahmed Abu Aziz. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a “tragic mishap” and expressed regret, reiterating that Israel’s war was against Hamas terrorists and aimed at defeating the group and rescuing hostages held in Gaza. Medical officials confirmed that two missiles struck the hospital, causing heavy casualties. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) reported that the Israel-Hamas conflict has become one of the deadliest for media workers, with at least 192 journalists killed in Gaza over the 22-month war. By comparison, 18 journalists have died in Russia’s war in Ukraine during the same period. Global Reactions U.S. President Donald Trump, responding to the news, said he was “not happy about it” and emphasized the need to bring an end to the ongoing “nightmare” in Gaza. Germany’s foreign ministry said it was “shocked by the killing of several journalists, rescue workers, and civilians,” demanding an investigation and urging Israel to allow immediate foreign media access and ensure journalist protection. U.K. Foreign Minister David Lammy said he was “horrified” by the strike, while Qatar denounced it as “a new episode in the ongoing series of heinous crimes” by Israel. The Foreign Press Association in Jerusalem called for an “immediate explanation” and demanded an end to what it termed the targeting of journalists. Investigation Underway The Israeli military confirmed carrying out a strike in the vicinity of Nasser Hospital and announced it would conduct an investigation. It reiterated that journalists are not targeted as such and expressed regret over civilian casualties. However, Israel has previously accused some Gaza-based journalists of militant ties, such as Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, who was killed earlier this month. Israel alleged he was a Hamas operative, a claim strongly rejected by Al Jazeera. Due to restrictions, international media has largely been barred from independently covering the war in Gaza. Most reporting has relied on Palestinian journalists and residents inside the enclave, whose safety has increasingly come under threat as the conflict continues.

India on Path to Become Third-Largest Economy, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (August 23, 2025) said that guided by the mantra of Reform, Perform, and Transform, India is in a position to help lift the world out of slow growth. Addressing a media event in New Delhi, he asserted that India will soon emerge as the world’s third-largest major economy and is steadily moving towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. PM Modi stressed that reforms for his government are not driven by compulsion or crisis but are a matter of commitment and conviction. He announced that the next-generation GST reform, which aims to simplify tax laws and reduce prices, will be completed before Diwali. “With this arsenal of next-generation reforms, manufacturing in India will increase, demand will rise, industries will gain momentum, and new jobs will be created,” he said. Calling upon the private sector to raise investments in clean energy, quantum technology, battery storage, advanced materials, and biotechnology, Modi said such steps would strengthen India’s resolve to become a developed nation. Highlighting the strength of India’s economy, the Prime Minister said, “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Very soon we are going to be the third-largest economy. Experts suggest India’s contribution to global growth will soon touch 20%.” He noted that this growth is supported by macroeconomic stability achieved in the past decade, with fiscal deficit expected to fall to 4.4%, controlled inflation, strong banks, record fundraising from capital markets, and robust foreign exchange reserves. Modi underlined that India is moving towards self-reliance with a focus on speed, scale, and scope. He said that unlike past governments that “missed the bus” in areas of technology and industry, India after 2014 has resolved to be in the driver’s seat of global opportunities. Citing technological progress, he said India developed its entire 5G stack domestically and is now working rapidly on Made-in-India 6G. He also pointed to rising exports, noting that India’s automobile exports increased from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore today, while the country has also begun exporting metro coaches, rail coaches, and locomotives. Looking ahead, PM Modi announced that India will soon export electric vehicles to 100 countries, with a major event scheduled for August 26 to mark the milestone.

UN-Backed Body Declares Famine in Gaza as Hunger Crisis Deepens

A United Nations-backed organization has, for the first time, declared a famine in Gaza since the Israel-Hamas war began in 2023, triggering urgent international appeals for an immediate ceasefire and accelerated aid delivery. According to a report released Friday by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), more than 640,000 people—nearly one-third of Gaza’s population—will face catastrophic levels of food insecurity by the end of September. The IPC warned that “acute malnutrition is projected to continue worsening rapidly” and called for an “immediate and sustained cessation of hostilities” as well as “unconditional and safe humanitarian access.” Israel strongly rejected the findings. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called the famine declaration “an outright lie,” insisting Israel “does not have a policy of starvation” but rather “a policy of preventing starvation.” Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) argued the report relied on “biased data” from Hamas. The IPC famine declaration is rare. Since its creation in 2004, the body has announced famines only four times before—in Somalia (2011), South Sudan (2017 and 2020), and Sudan (2024). Meanwhile, Israel is intensifying military plans to capture Gaza City, escalating its campaign despite international condemnation. Netanyahu recently authorized new talks to secure the release of hostages still held by Hamas, but has toughened conditions, demanding Hamas surrender, disarm, and release all 50 hostages. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the famine report as a wake-up call. “We cannot allow this situation to continue with impunity,” he said, calling for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and unfettered humanitarian access. The European Union and UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy echoed these appeals, urging Israel to allow “immediate, unimpeded, and sustained” delivery of aid. Rein Paulsen, a senior UN food security official, warned, “We are in a race against time. Every effort must be made for immediate and decisive action to prevent further loss of life.” The Gaza crisis worsened after Israel tightened its blockade following the collapse of a truce in March. While July saw a rise in aid deliveries and a decline in food prices, UN agencies maintain that supplies remain far below minimal needs. The war, which began after Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 and led to 250 abductions, has since killed more than 62,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

PM Modi: First Made-in-India Semiconductor Chip by 2025, 6G Network and EV Exports on the Horizon

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday announced that India’s first domestically manufactured semiconductor chip will be available in the market by the end of 2025. He also underlined that the government is working at a rapid pace to develop a Made-in-India 6G network. Speaking at The Economic Times World Leaders Forum, Modi reflected on India’s past missed opportunities in semiconductor manufacturing. “We all know that semiconductor manufacturing could have started in India 50–60 years ago, but India missed that chance, and the same thing continued for many years. Today, we have changed this situation. Semiconductor-related factories have started coming up in India,” he said. The Prime Minister added that the country’s first homegrown chip will soon be a reality. “By the end of this year, the first Made-in-India chip will come in the market,” Modi stated. Highlighting India’s technological push, he noted the progress in telecom. “We are working rapidly on Made in India 6G,” he said, stressing the importance of keeping pace with global advancements in the sector. On the electric vehicle (EV) front, Modi said India is set to emerge as a key player in the global market. “India is now going to export electric vehicles to 100 countries of the world. A very big program related to this is also being held after two days on 26th August,” he announced. Praising the country’s economic momentum, the Prime Minister said, “India, which follows the mantra of Reform, Perform, Transform, is today in a position to take the world out of slow growth. We are not the people who sit on the banks of stagnant water and throw pebbles. We are the people who can turn the fast-flowing stream.”

YRF Offers ₹22 Crore Compensation to Naga Vamsi After War 2’s Box Office Failure

Yash Raj Films (YRF) is facing financial strain following the underperformance of War 2 at the box office. According to Great Andhra, the studio has offered ₹22 crore in compensation to Telugu producer-distributor Naga Vamsi, who bore heavy losses after acquiring the film’s distribution rights in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, War 2 was expected to be a pan-India blockbuster, riding on the star power of its leads. However, the film has managed just ₹200 crore net domestically in its first week against a massive ₹400 crore landing cost. The Telugu version, which was sold for ₹80 crore, has grossed only ₹52 crore net, and collections have now dropped below ₹1 crore per day. To mitigate losses, YRF has reportedly structured the compensation as: The Telugu distributor had initially expected returns of over ₹100 crore, but final numbers are likely to fall far short. While the Hindi version has fared somewhat better, crossing ₹150 crore net, the Telugu release has been termed a “disaster.” Overseas numbers too remain underwhelming, with War 2’s worldwide collection hovering around ₹300 crore. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film also stars Kiara Advani and forms part of the expanding YRF Spy Universe.

India, China Take First Big Steps Towards Resetting Ties; Expert Group to Work on Border Settlement

In a significant move to reset the trajectory of bilateral relations, India and China have agreed to work towards a settlement of the boundary question by setting up an expert group to explore early solutions on boundary delimitation. The decision came after a series of high-level meetings involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said both sides have also decided to resume direct flights at the earliest, expand the Indian pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Manasarovar, and reopen border trade through the three designated trading points — Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La, and Nathu La. Progress on Border Dialogue Doval and Wang, serving as Special Representatives on the Boundary Question, held the 24th round of SR Talks. Both leaders noted that peace and tranquillity had been maintained since the 23rd round and reaffirmed the importance of stability along the border to strengthen bilateral ties. The two sides agreed to seek a “fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable framework” for boundary settlement in line with the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles. The newly established expert group under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC) will explore “early harvest” outcomes in boundary delimitation. Additionally, both sides agreed to create General Level Mechanisms in the Eastern and Middle Sectors, complementing the existing structure in the Western Sector, to further aid in de-escalation and border management. Diplomatic & Economic Engagements China has welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s participation at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. India, in turn, reaffirmed full support to China’s SCO Presidency and agreed to enhance cooperation on future diplomatic events, including the 2026 BRICS Summit in India and the 2027 Summit in China. On the economic front, both sides committed to facilitating trade and investment flows and ensuring smoother cross-border interactions. A Thaw After Tensions Relations between India and China had hit a low following the 2020 Galwan clash and prolonged standoff in Ladakh. The recent developments mark a clear thaw, coinciding with escalating global trade tensions following US President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on India and China. The latest measures highlight a broader intent from both nations to adopt a practical, forward-looking approach, balancing security concerns with economic and cultural engagement.
