Congress Urges PM Modi to Restore J&K Statehood in Monsoon Session, Cites Constitutional Promises

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge have written a joint letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to introduce legislation in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament to restore full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. In their letter, the Congress leaders said that downgrading a full-fledged state to a Union Territory — as was done with Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 — is without precedent in independent India. They reminded the Prime Minister of his repeated commitments to restore the region’s statehood, including assurances made in Parliament and public forums. “The Prime Minister has, on multiple occasions, personally reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring statehood,” the letter read, citing at least two public statements made by PM Modi last year. The Congress leaders said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have, for the last five years, consistently demanded the return of full statehood, a demand rooted in democratic and constitutional rights. They also pointed out that, while India has granted statehood to Union Territories in the past, never before has a state been reduced to a Union Territory. The letter further reminded the Prime Minister that the Union Government, during hearings in the Article 370 case, had assured the Supreme Court of its intention to restore statehood “at the earliest.” In response to the Congress appeal, Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah thanked Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. “We are only demanding what was promised to us in Parliament, the Supreme Court, and in public speeches,” he said, urging the Centre to act swiftly on the matter. The Congress also highlighted the need for constitutional safeguards for Ladakh and called on the government to extend protections under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to the region, ensuring preservation of its culture and autonomy. The joint letter is being interpreted as a signal that the INDIA bloc — the opposition alliance — may raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in a major way during the upcoming session of Parliament. Congress leaders concluded their appeal by urging the Modi government to “bring forward legislation in the upcoming Monsoon Session to grant full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.” Jammu and Kashmir lost its statehood and special constitutional status on August 5, 2019, after the Centre abrogated Article 370 and reorganized the region into two Union Territories — Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.

CDS Anil Chauhan Praises Indigenous Defence Tech, Reveals Pakistan’s Drones Failed During May Conflict

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Wednesday revealed key details about the four-day conflict between India and Pakistan in May, following the Pahalgam terror attack. Addressing a workshop in Delhi, he stated that many of the drones deployed by Pakistan during the hostilities were either ineffective or non-functional—some even recovered in nearly intact condition. Chauhan said that Pakistan launched a barrage of unarmed drones and loitering munitions towards Indian border states in retaliation for Operation Sindoor, which India had launched in response to the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam. Despite the scale of Pakistan’s drone assault, none of the aerial threats caused any damage to Indian military or civilian infrastructure. “Most were neutralised through a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic means,” he noted, suggesting that India’s drone countermeasures and preparedness were highly effective. General Chauhan used the occasion to strongly advocate for indigenous weapons and self-reliance in defence technology. He credited India’s homegrown systems for their decisive role in the operation. “Operation Sindoor has shown us why indigenously developed counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) are vital. We must invent and build for our specific needs and terrain,” he said. The CDS also highlighted that drone warfare is rapidly reshaping global military tactics. “Recent conflicts have shown us how drones can shift the tactical balance disproportionately. We must be ready with tomorrow’s technology today,” he stressed, warning that outdated systems are no longer viable in modern warfare. Chauhan warned against overdependence on foreign technology, citing vulnerabilities such as production delays, shortage of spares, and compromised operational secrecy. “When we design, make, and innovate at home, we not only secure our capabilities but also surprise our enemies,” he said. He specifically cited the indigenous Akashteer missile system as a standout performer in the recent operation. Developed under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP), the Akashteer and its advanced variant Akash NG successfully intercepted multiple drone swarms and missile threats during the operation. With the ability to reach speeds of Mach 2.5 and engage targets from 30 metres up to 20 km in altitude, the system proved crucial in defending Indian airspace. Concluding his remarks, Chauhan noted that asymmetric drone warfare is changing the face of modern combat and compelling militaries worldwide to rethink air defence doctrines. “We must be agile, innovative, and self-reliant to maintain the strategic edge,” he affirmed.

Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Defence Seeks Retrial, Terms CBI Probe Malicious and Flawed

In a significant development in the ongoing criminal appeal related to the Bhopal gas disaster, senior advocate Anirban Roy, representing two of the convicted officials—J Mukund and S P Chaudhary—appeared before the Principal District Judge in Bhopal on Tuesday and argued for a retrial under Section 468 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Roy contended that the CBI’s investigation into the 1984 industrial catastrophe was “malafide, malicious, motivated, and fraudulent.” To strengthen his plea for a retrial, he submitted a detailed compilation of previous cases where both high courts and the Supreme Court of India had permitted retrial under Section 464 of the CrPC, particularly when procedural errors or defective framing of charges affected the fairness of the original trial. The Bhopal gas tragedy, one of the world’s worst industrial disasters, resulted in thousands of deaths and long-term health consequences for residents. In 2010, seven Indian officials of Union Carbide were convicted by the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court and sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment. However, they were released on bail the same day and later appealed the verdict in 2011. Roy maintained that the charges framed against the accused were based on a “botched-up” investigation by the CBI, and therefore lacked credibility. As part of his continuing arguments, he invoked Section 468 CrPC—which deals with the period of limitation for taking cognizance of offences—but framed it within the broader context of Section 464 CrPC, which allows courts to permit retrials if there is no failure of justice despite irregularities in framing charges. The arguments for the retrial are expected to continue in court on Wednesday, as the high-profile case inches forward after over a decade of legal wrangling and nearly four decades since the disaster.

Diljit Dosanjh Unveils Intense Poster for ‘Punjab 95’, Transforms into Human Rights Icon Jaswant Singh Khalra

Diljit Dosanjh has shared a powerful new poster for his long-awaited biopic Punjab 95, in which he portrays the late human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. The stark visual — showing Diljit with tied hands and a haunting, defiant stare — has gone viral, reigniting public interest in the film’s controversial and politically charged story. Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, Punjab 95 delves into the harrowing true story of Khalra, who courageously exposed thousands of extrajudicial killings in Punjab during the insurgency era of the 1980s and ’90s. A Film Marked by Censorship and Controversy Though initially set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, the film was mysteriously pulled from the lineup just days before screening. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly demanded over 120 cuts, citing the politically sensitive nature of its content — further delaying the film’s release. Director Trehan has described Punjab 95 as “a haunting depiction of systemic brutality and the cost of speaking truth to power.” The film seeks to immortalize Khalra’s courage, who was abducted and murdered in 1995 after revealing the illegal cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies. Diljit’s Commitment to the Cause Despite the setbacks, Diljit has remained firm in his support for the film. His latest poster drop is more than just a promotional effort — it’s a bold statement about truth, justice, and remembrance, shared with his massive fanbase to keep the spotlight on Khalra’s legacy. Meanwhile, Diljit is also juggling work on Border 2, a war drama co-starring Varun Dhawan and Ahaan Shetty, but Punjab 95 remains his most politically and emotionally charged role to date. As the film awaits final certification and a release date, fans and human rights watchers alike are hoping Punjab 95 sees the light of day soon — not just as cinema, but as a crucial chapter in India’s reckoning with its past.

With a stellar cast, genre-defining themes, and a crossover-laced narrative, Thama promises to be the next tentpole horror-comedy blockbuster from Maddock Films.

Team India Breaks Record for Most Sixes in an Away Test Series, Surpasses West Indies and New Zealand

In a historic feat, Team India has smashed the record for the most sixes hit in an away Test series, surpassing the previous joint record held by West Indies and New Zealand (32 sixes each). India now stands at 36 sixes with two more Tests and one full innings left to play in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. This landmark was reached during the third Test, as multiple Indian players contributed to the tally: India’s aggressive approach with the bat under the leadership of Shubman Gill has reaped dividends, and with the series only halfway done, experts believe the team may cross the 50-sixes mark — an unprecedented number in Test cricket history. Previous Record Holders: India’s ability to consistently clear the ropes in foreign conditions marks a significant shift in their traditional Test-playing style, blending aggression with strategic risk-taking. This record also underscores the depth in India’s batting lineup, with contributions from both top-order and lower-order players. As the series continues, all eyes will be on whether Team India can extend this record and redefine attacking Test cricket on foreign soil.

India’s First One-Shot Dengue Vaccine Nears Completion of Phase-III Trials: Over 8,000 Participants Enrolled

India is inching closer to a potential breakthrough in dengue prevention as the Phase-III clinical trial of DengiAll, a one-shot tetravalent dengue vaccine developed by Panacea Biotec, progresses rapidly. The trial, being conducted across 20 centres nationwide, is expected to complete participant enrolment by October 2025, according to scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). So far, over 8,000 volunteers from cities like Pune, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Bhubaneswar have already received either DengiAll or a placebo, with the final goal being the inclusion of approximately 10,500 participants. A Significant Milestone in Public Health DengiAll represents India’s first indigenously-developed single-dose dengue vaccine, co-led by ICMR institutions such as: According to Dr. Manoj Murhekar, Director of NIE, early results from Phase 1/2 trials indicate no safety concerns, and the current Phase-III trial aims to evaluate the efficacy, long-term immunity, and safety of the vaccine. Participants will be followed up for two years. The trial, which began in August 2024, is multi-centre, double-blind, randomised, and placebo-controlled. The first participant was vaccinated at PGIMS Rohtak. Why a Tetravalent Vaccine Matters Dengue is caused by four serotypes (DEN-1 to DEN-4), and infection with one serotype provides little to no immunity against the others. This poses a challenge in vaccine development, as a successful candidate must protect against all four. India sees co-circulation of all four serotypes in many regions, making a tetravalent vaccine like DengiAll especially critical. Vaccine Origins and Global Standing The vaccine strain, TV003/TV005, was originally developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. It showed promising results in trials conducted in Brazil, and Panacea Biotec is currently the most advanced Indian company working with this strain. The company holds a process patent for its vaccine formulation. India is one of the top 30 countries most affected by dengue. In 2024, the country reported over 2.3 lakh cases and 297 deaths. Alarmingly, 75–80% of infections are asymptomatic, yet still transmissible through Aedes mosquitoes. Children at Higher Risk Among the 20–25% symptomatic cases, children are particularly vulnerable to severe forms of the disease, including dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, often requiring hospitalisation. A Ray of Hope If successful, DengiAll could be India’s first licensed dengue vaccine and a game-changer in reducing the country’s disease burden and mortality rate. It also offers the promise of global impact, as dengue continues to surge across 129 countries, per WHO data from 2023. With its indigenous development, strategic public-private partnership, and rigorous scientific backing, DengiAll is poised to play a crucial role in India’s public health infrastructure — especially in the fight against one of the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne diseases in the world.
