Sebi Slaps ₹25 Lakh Penalty on BSE for Unequal Disclosure Practices and Lax Trade Oversight

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has imposed a ₹25 lakh penalty on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for failing to ensure equal and transparent access to corporate disclosures and for not taking disciplinary action against brokers repeatedly modifying client trade codes. The order follows an extensive inspection conducted between February 2021 and September 2022. Breach of Disclosure Norms According to Sebi’s 45-page order, BSE’s system architecture allowed paid clients and its internal Listing Compliance Monitoring (LCM) team to access price-sensitive corporate announcements before they were made public on the exchange’s website. This created an unfair information advantage, violating the principle of equal access that underpins market integrity. Sebi found that BSE failed to comply with Regulation 39(3) of the SECC Regulations, 2018, which requires stock exchanges to ensure fair, transparent, and equal access to all stakeholders. It also noted the absence of a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) feed, a standard tool that could have helped disseminate corporate disclosures uniformly in real-time. Though BSE later introduced a time-gap mechanism to mitigate the issue, Sebi observed that this corrective measure was implemented only after lapses were pointed out during inspection. Negligence in Monitoring Client Code Modifications Sebi also flagged serious lapses in BSE’s oversight of client code modifications, which are only permitted in genuine cases such as clerical errors. The exchange, however, failed to take disciplinary action against brokers with frequent modifications and did not effectively monitor ‘error accounts’ — a loophole that could be exploited for unethical trading practices, especially between unrelated institutional clients. Sebi’s Statement on BSE’s Responsibilities Sebi’s Quasi-Judicial Authority Santosh Shukla emphasized the critical role stock exchanges play as the first layer of market oversight, particularly when handling material price-sensitive information. “As a premier recognised stock exchange, BSE must have internal controls to manage and handle corporate announcements in compliance with its obligations,” Shukla stated. He further noted that the early access to disclosures by internal teams and select clients impaired the impartiality and fairness expected from a frontline market regulator like the BSE. Additionally, BSE displayed “laxity and negligence” in enforcing norms related to trade code modifications. Impact and Implications This order marks a significant step in Sebi’s ongoing efforts to tighten corporate governance and prevent information asymmetry in Indian capital markets. It also serves as a warning to other exchanges and intermediaries about the need for robust internal systems and proactive compliance to uphold investor trust.

Single Dose of Psilocybin Shows Long-Term Relief from Depression and Anxiety in Cancer Patients: Study

A groundbreaking new study published in Cancer, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, suggests that a single dose of psilocybin—the active compound in magic mushrooms—combined with psychological support, may offer long-lasting relief from depression and anxiety in cancer patients. 📊 Key Findings from the Study: 🧪 Current and Future Research An ongoing randomised, double-blind trial is evaluating up to two doses of psilocybin versus placebo to determine whether repeat dosing can increase the proportion of patients achieving full remission. Dr. Manish Agrawal, lead author and oncologist at Sunstone Therapies, stated: “One dose of psilocybin with psychological support has a long-term positive impact… We’re exploring whether repeating the treatment resolves depression for more than half of the patients.” 🧠 Why This Matters: 🌱 What’s Next? If these promising results are confirmed in larger studies, psilocybin-assisted therapy could emerge as a transformative approach in supporting the emotional well-being of people living with cancer.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon Calls for Transparent, Consistent Policies Globally; Reiterates India Sourcing Target of $10 Billion by 2027

Walmart Inc. President and CEO Doug McMillon has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to local sourcing, job creation, and policy compliance, while emphasizing the need for a level playing field and consistent regulations in every market it operates in — including India. Speaking to media, McMillon noted, “We operate in many countries, and we consistently ask for a level playing field everywhere. We engage with various governments, sharing our views, but we don’t set the rules—we comply with them.” India Sourcing Goals on Track McMillon highlighted that Walmart is on track to source $10 billion worth of goods annually from India by 2027, covering a wide range of product categories. Once this milestone is achieved, the company plans to announce its next set of sourcing targets for India. “We like to buy locally, create jobs, and benefit from shorter lead times — especially for food and consumables,” McMillon said, adding that local sourcing remains a strategic priority across Walmart’s global operations. Clarity on E-Commerce Policy Key On the regulatory environment in India, where foreign-owned e-commerce firms like Flipkart and Amazon are barred from holding inventory or selling directly to consumers, McMillon said, “The more things are transparent and consistent, the better it is for business, whether in India or globally.” When asked whether Flipkart should be allowed to hold inventory, he responded, “We have expertise in inventory management and would be happy if the rules allowed it, but we leave rule-making to others.” Not Involved in U.S.–India BTA Talks McMillon clarified that Walmart is not directly participating in the ongoing bilateral trade agreement (BTA) discussions between the U.S. and India. Media reports suggest the Trump administration is pushing for wider access for American e-commerce firms to India’s $125 billion digital retail market, with negotiations expected to conclude by next month. Tariff Adaptability and Pricing Strategy Addressing global trade dynamics, McMillon said Walmart is well-positioned to manage tariff pressures, especially in the U.S. “We’ve been managing tariffs since 2018, and our experienced merchants can adapt by making different sourcing choices,” he said. Walmart continues to source from both India and China, depending on the category. He reiterated Walmart’s unwavering focus on affordability: “Keeping the cost of living low is our priority. Low prices are in our DNA, and we aim to maintain a price gap with competitors to deliver value to customers globally.” Outlook Doug McMillon’s remarks reflect Walmart’s long-term confidence in the Indian market, despite regulatory complexities. With its sourcing goals progressing steadily and a clear emphasis on policy clarity, Walmart appears poised to deepen its footprint in India — as both a global buyer and a digital retail player via Flipkart — while navigating geopolitical and economic challenges with agility.

Navy HQ Clerk Arrested for Spying for Pakistan’s ISI During Operation Sindoor; Nationwide Espionage Crackdown Intensifies

A shocking case of espionage has come to light with the arrest of Vishal Yadav, an employee posted at the Indian Navy Headquarters in New Delhi. He has been accused of leaking sensitive defence information to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), including crucial details during Operation Sindoor, India’s high-profile military operation following the Pahalgam terror attack. Yadav, a clerk and resident of Haryana, was arrested by the Rajasthan Police’s CID Intelligence unit after months of surveillance. According to senior officer Vishnukant Gupta, Yadav was in constant contact with a female ISI handler, who posed as “Priya Sharma” on social media. She reportedly paid Yadav in exchange for confidential information related to naval and defence activities. Forensic analysis of Yadav’s phone uncovered years of communications and data sharing, including during Operation Sindoor (May 7–10), when Indian forces targeted terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. Crypto Payments and Gaming AddictionInvestigators found that Yadav, reportedly addicted to online gaming, had suffered major financial losses. This vulnerability was allegedly exploited by Pakistani handlers. He received payments through cryptocurrency accounts and direct bank transfers, making the financial trail harder to trace. Yadav is currently being interrogated at the Central Interrogation Centre in Jaipur, with multiple intelligence agencies involved. Officials are probing the depth of the information leak and investigating whether he acted alone or was part of a larger espionage ring. Wider Crackdown After Pahalgam AttackThe arrest comes amid a broader nationwide crackdown on Pakistani espionage networks, which intensified after the Pahalgam terror attack. In recent weeks, several individuals across India have been detained for alleged links with ISI operatives, many of whom maintained contact through social media honey traps. In Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, a state government employee named Shakur Khan was arrested for spying for Pakistan. In another major case, Haryana-based YouTuber and vlogger Jyoti Malhotra was taken into custody after being linked to a Pakistani officer posted at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi during Operation Sindoor. The developments highlight a growing concern over digital espionage, where Indian nationals are being targeted through social media platforms and lured using money, romance, or ideological manipulation. Intelligence agencies have urged vigilance and are expected to roll out stricter counter-espionage protocols within defence and civil departments.

Iran Executes 3 Accused of Spying for Mossad Amid Fragile Ceasefire with Israel

Tehran. Just a day after a US-brokered ceasefire was agreed upon between Israel and Iran, Iran has executed three men accused of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, according to the country’s judiciary-linked Mizan news agency. The executed men were convicted of collaborating with Mossad and smuggling equipment used in the assassination of an unnamed personality. While no further details were shared, the swift executions underscore the lingering tensions despite the truce. In addition, as many as 700 individuals have reportedly been arrested across Iran for alleged links with Israel, according to Nournews, a state-affiliated outlet often seen as close to Iran’s security establishment. Shadow War, Open Conflict Iran and Israel have long been engaged in a shadow war of cyberattacks, assassinations, and intelligence operations. However, the recent 12-day open conflict marked one of the most dangerous escalations in decades. The ceasefire, which was negotiated after the United States launched airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — was described as a hard-earned truce. But its implementation got off to a shaky start as both Tehran and Tel Aviv accused each other of violating the ceasefire terms. Trump’s Intervention and Truce Assurance Reacting to the escalating tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump, who played a key role in securing the ceasefire, expressed his frustration over the initial violations. He later sought to reassure the global community that the situation was under control. “Israel is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘plane wave’ to Iran. Nobody will be hurt, the ceasefire is in effect,” the 79-year-old president wrote on his Truth Social platform. Nuclear Accusations at the Core The latest hostilities began when Israel claimed that Iran was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon — an accusation Iran strongly denies. The executions and arrests appear to reflect Tehran’s renewed focus on internal security and espionage prevention in the wake of the military escalation and international pressure. Observers warn that despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high, and incidents like these could further strain the already fragile truce.

Operation Sindhu Winds Down as Israel-Iran Ceasefire Takes Effect; Over 2,800 Indians Evacuated

New Delhi/Tehran. Following the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the Indian Embassy in Iran has begun winding up its emergency evacuation operations under Operation Sindhu, which had facilitated the safe return of thousands of Indian nationals since the West Asian conflict began on June 13. On Tuesday (June 24, 2025), the Embassy officially closed its help desk in Mashhad, a key hub for evacuation efforts in Iran. “Since there has been an announcement of ceasefire, the Embassy is gradually winding up the evacuation exercise initiated during the military conflict in Iran,” the Embassy in Tehran said in a statement. Indian citizens still requiring help or advice have been asked to reach out via the Embassy’s Telegram channel or the emergency helplines, which will remain operational for a few more days to monitor the situation and support any remaining needs. 2,295 Indians Evacuated from Iran The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that 2,295 Indian nationals had been evacuated from Iran since the start of Operation Sindhu. The last evacuation flight from Mashhad landed in India early Tuesday, carrying 292 Indians, along with two Nepali nationals — Ganesh P. Pokhrel and Suman Gaire — as confirmed by the Embassy of Nepal. In light of the ceasefire, the Embassy has advised Indian citizens not to proceed to Mashhad for evacuation and instead remain where they are unless instructed otherwise. Evacuations from Israel Continue Coinciding with the ceasefire declaration, India also ramped up efforts to evacuate its citizens from Israel. On Tuesday morning, 161 Indians arrived in India from Israel via Amman, Jordan, since Israeli airports remain closed due to ongoing security risks. This was followed by the evacuation of 268 more Indians from Israel on a C-17 aircraft of the Indian Air Force, which airlifted them from Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt, to Delhi by 11 a.m. on June 24. In total, 594 Indians have been evacuated from Israel under Operation Sindhu. Ceasefire Confirmed The ceasefire between Israel and Iran was formally declared by U.S. President Donald Trump, who urged both sides to de-escalate following weeks of cross-border hostilities that had endangered regional stability and led to a massive evacuation effort by several countries, including India. The Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the ceasefire announcement and reaffirmed India’s commitment to the safety of its citizens abroad, thanking partner nations for their coordination in supporting evacuation logistics during the crisis.

India’s Shubhanshu Shukla Soars to Space Aboard Axiom-4, Becomes First Indian to Reach ISS

The Axiom-4 mission successfully launched into space at noon on Wednesday, carrying Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla and three other international crew members. The spacecraft began its 28-hour journey to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a historic moment for India and several other nations. With this mission, Shubhanshu Shukla became the second Indian to travel to space, over four decades after Rakesh Sharma’s historic flight on a Soviet mission in 1984. Significantly, Shukla is the first Indian to reach the International Space Station, a continuously manned research facility orbiting Earth at an altitude of 400 kilometers. Also aboard are Poland’s Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski and Hungary’s Tibor Kapu, both representing their nations’ return to human spaceflight after more than 40 years. Shortly after entering orbit, Shukla addressed viewers from space, saying, “This is not the beginning of my flight. This is the beginning of India’s human spaceflight efforts. I am with you all. You all can participate in this flight and feel the energy, and become a part of this mission.” The mission had faced several delays due to weather conditions and technical issues but finally launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is expected to dock with the ISS around 4:30 PM IST on Thursday. Back home, the launch was celebrated with cheers and applause at the CSIR headquarters in New Delhi, where Union Science Minister Jitendra Singh, scientists, and dignitaries including Australian High Commissioner Philip Green watched the event live. The Axiom-4 mission symbolizes not just a scientific milestone, but a new chapter in India’s space journey, reinforcing its aspirations in human space exploration.
