Backlash Over Telugu Version of ‘Coolie’ Song “Powerhouse” Sparks Debate on Pan-Indian Adaptations

The newly released Telugu version of the hit track “Powerhouse” from Coolie has stirred unexpected backlash online, catching the film’s team off guard. While the Tamil original, praised for its raw intensity and rousing delivery, became a viral anthem across South India, the Telugu adaptation has been met with disappointment for lacking the same emotional fire. Listeners across social media platforms have criticized the Telugu lyrics and vocal performance, calling them underwhelming compared to the Tamil version. Many fans argue that the essence of the song—a key emotional and tonal pillar of the film—is lost in translation. Some have gone so far as to request that the filmmakers retain the original Tamil track in the Telugu version of the movie. This reaction adds to a growing discourse around pan-Indian releases. In the past, Telugu audiences have slammed Tamil filmmakers for not localizing content properly—be it through untranslated titles, poor dubbing, or retaining Tamil lyrics in songs. A recent example includes Vettaiyan, which faced criticism for its lack of Telugu-friendly presentation. Ironically, Coolie’s team, attempting to avoid similar backlash by producing a Telugu rendition, now finds itself in the crosshairs again. This illustrates the complex dilemma of pan-India cinema: how to stay true to original content while adapting it meaningfully for different linguistic and cultural audiences. As users compare tracks across languages instantly in the digital era, the Telugu “Powerhouse” backlash proves that localization needs more than linguistic translation—it demands emotional resonance, musical integrity, and cultural nuance. For now, the makers may need to reconsider their approach, especially as anticipation builds for Coolie’s release across multiple languages.

All Accused Acquitted in 2008 Malegaon Blast Case After 17-Year Trial

In a landmark judgment, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai on Thursday acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The court held that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient and credible evidence to establish guilt beyond reasonable doubt. Special Judge AK Lahoti stated that the evidence presented by the prosecution was inconsistent and lacked coherence. “Terrorism has no religion, but conviction cannot be based on moral grounds,” the judge emphasized in the ruling. The case stemmed from a blast on September 29, 2008, in Malegaon, Maharashtra, where an improvised explosive device (IED) placed on a motorcycle exploded in a Muslim-majority locality during the holy month of Ramzan. The explosion killed six and injured over 100 people. The court ruled that the prosecution could not conclusively prove that the motorcycle used in the blast belonged to Sadhvi Pragya, as the vehicle’s chassis number was only partially recovered. Moreover, the court noted she had renounced material possessions after becoming a sanyasi two years before the incident. In Lt. Col. Purohit’s case, the court found no credible evidence to support the claim that he had sourced RDX from Kashmir or participated in bomb-making. Though there were financial transactions between Purohit and another accused, Ajay Rahirkar, the funds were used for personal expenses such as home construction and insurance policies, not terrorism-related activities. The court also rejected the prosecution’s theory of a conspiracy among the seven accused. While it acknowledged that six people had died in the blast, it accepted that only 95 were injured—discounting a few manipulated medical certificates submitted during the trial. The case was initially investigated by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), which arrested 12 individuals and alleged that the blast was orchestrated by the group Abhinav Bharat. In 2010, the investigation was handed over to the NIA, which filed a supplementary chargesheet in 2016 and suggested dropping MCOCA charges and certain accused due to lack of evidence. Despite this, the court in December 2017 ruled that seven accused—Thakur, Purohit, Ramesh Upadhyay, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dwivedi—would face trial under the IPC, UAPA, and Explosive Substances Act. The trial officially began in December 2018. Over the course of the trial, the prosecution examined 323 witnesses, though 34 turned hostile, and more than 30 witnesses died before they could testify. One of the accused, Sudhakar Dwivedi, even questioned whether a blast had occurred at all, prompting the court to examine over 100 victims and injured individuals. Final arguments concluded in April 2024, and the verdict was reserved for April 19. In its final ruling, the court also directed compensation for victims—₹2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 each for the injured. Legal Representation: The judgment concludes a politically and socially sensitive case that had drawn nationwide attention for nearly two decades.

India Stands Firm Amid U.S. Tariff Hike and Trade Pressure

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday imposed 25% tariffs on imports from India along with an unspecified “penalty,” but India has remained largely unfazed by the move. While the U.S. has been actively securing trade deals with other nations like Japan—focused on expanding market access for American automobiles and agricultural products—India has taken a more cautious stance, especially when it comes to its domestic agricultural sector. India’s reluctance stems from its aim to protect local farmers, a significant electoral base. In its recent trade deal with the U.K., New Delhi successfully shielded sensitive agricultural sectors from tariff reductions. Likewise, India has shown no urgency to conclude a deal with the U.S., despite the recent tariff hikes. Carlos Casanova, senior economist at UBP, explained that India’s exports to the U.S. are not substantial enough to pressure New Delhi into quick compromises. In 2024, U.S. goods imports from India stood at $87.4 billion. Opening India’s agricultural sector to American firms—especially those dealing with genetically modified foods and dairy—remains a political and economic non-starter. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized in a CNBC interview that India is deeply committed to protecting its farmers and MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises). He also reiterated that India does not negotiate trade deals based on artificial deadlines but on national interest. Goyal expressed confidence that a balanced trade agreement could be reached by the October-November 2025 timeframe. Experts like Jayant Dasgupta, India’s former ambassador to the World Trade Organization, pointed out that India’s stance on agriculture is uncompromising. There is little room for concessions, particularly on genetically modified food products and dairy imports. Meanwhile, Harsha Vardhan Agarwal, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), acknowledged that higher U.S. tariffs would affect Indian exports but remained optimistic that a long-term agreement could eventually be reached. Strategically, India continues to be a valuable partner for the U.S. in the broader Indo-Pacific region. Analysts say Washington is unlikely to alienate New Delhi, especially as it seeks to counter China’s growing global influence. As part of the “China plus one” manufacturing strategy, India is seen as a viable alternative hub. The U.S. may retain control of high-end manufacturing, while India supports lower-cost production, creating a symbiotic economic relationship. According to Vishnu Varathan of Mizuho Bank, shifting manufacturing to India can help the U.S. reduce dependency on China while maintaining global supply chain resilience. In doing so, India may enhance its strategic position, supporting U.S. interests while carefully navigating its own diplomatic and economic priorities.

Shashi Tharoor Misses Parliament Protest Over Arrest of Two Nuns, Stirring Speculation Over His Rift with Congress Leadership

Kerala MPs, led by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, staged a protest in Parliament today against the arrest of two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. Notably absent from today’s demonstration was senior party leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who had joined his Kerala colleagues in a similar protest just yesterday. During yesterday’s rally in the Parliament complex, Tharoor held a placard reading “India for all, proud to be one” and told the media, “The nuns are innocent; they must be released. There should not be mob rule in the country. This is the government’s responsibility.” In contrast, today’s protest was led by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who condemned the Chhattisgarh police for “manhandling” the nuns and accused the state government of targeting religious minorities. Tharoor’s absence has fueled talk of growing tensions between him and the Congress high command. The former diplomat, celebrated for his oratory skills, was conspicuously left off the party’s list of speakers during the recent Operation Sindoor debate—an omission seized upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP. Party insiders suggest that when approached to participate, Tharoor declined to “toe the party line,” insisting he would not contradict his own publicly stated views merely for the sake of party messaging. In recent months, Tharoor has drawn criticism from within the Congress for praising the BJP government’s swift response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. He has repeatedly emphasized that his “first loyalty” is to the nation, not any political party, arguing that parties are simply “a means of making the nation better” in their own ways. His remarks reportedly clashed with the Congress leadership’s efforts to confront the government over allegations of intelligence failures and the sudden ceasefire called by U.S. President Donald Trump. Background on the Nuns’ ArrestLast week, two Kerala-based Catholic nuns traveling through Chhattisgarh’s Durg station were apprehended by local authorities after Bajrang Dal activists accused them of trafficking three minor tribal girls under the guise of offering jobs and education. They have since been charged under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (human trafficking) and under the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act (forced conversion). The arrests have prompted outrage from opposition parties, Christian organizations, and even the BJP’s Kerala unit, with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and state BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar calling for the nuns’ immediate release and safe return.

DGCA Audit Uncovers 51 Safety Violations at Air India; Seven Classified as Critical

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducted a routine safety audit of Air India between July 1 and 4, uncovering a total of 51 violations and observations across multiple operational areas. At least two senior officials confirmed to the Hindustan Times that many of these fell under the DGCA’s “Level I” safety classification, denoting critical lapses that demand immediate corrective action. Among the seven Level I findings was an incident in which an Air India Boeing 787 flight from Milan to New Delhi exceeded its maximum duty time by 2 hours and 18 minutes. Other critical breaches included recurrent training deficiencies among Boeing 787 and 777 pilots—several had missed mandatory line-checks prior to their periodic evaluations—and the use of flight simulators that did not meet DGCA qualification standards. The audit flagged significant shortcomings in Air India’s operational planning for “Category C” airports (typically high-altitude or otherwise demanding airfields), noting that proper route assessments had not been conducted. The airline’s crew rostering system was also criticized for failing to generate “hard alerts” when minimum staffing levels weren’t met; Reuters reports that at least four international departures operated with insufficient cabin crew on board. Additional non-compliances—44 in total—ranged from inconsistencies in door and safety-equipment inspections to gaps in training documentation. The DGCA noted the absence of designated chief pilots for both the Airbus A320 and A350 fleets, creating “a lack of accountability and effective monitoring of flight operations” for those aircraft types. Air India has been given until July 30 to submit a detailed corrective-action plan addressing the critical Level I findings, and until August 23 to resolve the remaining issues. The carrier has acknowledged the audit results, pledging full transparency and promising to work with the regulator to enhance its safety framework. These findings come amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of Air India following the June 12 crash of Flight AI-171, as well as a spate of passenger complaints concerning maintenance and cabin conditions. In late July, the DGCA issued multiple show-cause notices to the airline and its senior management over systemic lapses, and has ordered mandatory safety checks on all Boeing 787s in the fleet.

Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Raises Concerns Among Kerala Tourists and Travel Operators

Thiruvananthapuram: The ongoing conflict between Thailand and Cambodia has raised concerns among tourists and tour operators in Kerala, following a travel advisory issued by the Indian embassy. The war, now in its fourth day, has seen heavy shelling along the border between the two countries. Despite the situation, there have been no immediate cancellations, as most travelers from Kerala typically visit Thailand destinations like Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket — areas that remain unaffected by the shelling. Cambodia, meanwhile, is currently in its off-season for Kerala tourists. Sejo Jose of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) clarified that the tourist areas flagged in the advisory are not commonly visited by people from Kerala. “Most Keralites travel to Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket, which are safe,” he said. However, he added that the situation is being closely monitored, and local tour operators have reached out to counterparts in Thailand for updates on safety. Basheer Ahemed, a committee member for the southern region of the Outbound Tour Operators Association, echoed this sentiment, stating that travel has not been affected yet. “But it could become an issue if the conflict persists,” he warned. He also confirmed that life in Bangkok and Pattaya remains normal and that feedback from local contacts in Thailand has been reassuring. Cambodia, which has recently emerged as a popular destination, is not expected to see immediate impacts due to the timing. “Kerala tourists usually start traveling to Cambodia from mid-August, often combining it with Vietnam,” explained Jose. “If the conflict continues, travel plans could be disrupted during the peak season.” Manjari Singhal, Chief Growth and Business Officer at Cleartrip, noted a slight dip in travel to Thailand and Cambodia since the advisory was issued during the week of July 24. However, she remained optimistic. “The recent ceasefire, coupled with upcoming long weekends and festive holidays, could help revive travel interest,” she said. Tourists and travel companies are now hoping for a ceasefire to ensure safe and uninterrupted travel to these popular Southeast Asian destinations.

Aamir Khan’s “Sitaare Zameen Par” to Premiere Globally on YouTube From August 1

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has announced an unprecedented global digital release strategy for his latest family drama, “Sitaare Zameen Par.” Following its theatrical run, the film will be available on YouTube Movies-on-Demand starting August 1, 2025, making it the first major Indian release to bypass traditional streaming platforms entirely. Priced at ₹100 in India and with region-specific pricing in 38 other countries—including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Spain—the rental model is designed to keep quality cinema affordable and accessible. Audiences will be able to rent and stream the movie directly on YouTube, turning their personal devices into a cinema screen anywhere in the world. Directed by a yet-to-be-named filmmaker and co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, “Sitaare Zameen Par” features a unique ensemble that includes ten actors with intellectual disabilities, underscoring its message of inclusion and diversity. This approach not only elevates underrepresented talent but also aligns with the film’s core themes of love, joy, and the beauty of human differences. The movie, often described as a spiritual successor to Khan’s 2007 blockbuster “Taare Zameen Par,” has already struck a chord with viewers, surpassing ₹250 crore at the global box office. By choosing YouTube—rather than conventional streaming services—Aamir Khan aims to break down geographical and economic barriers, ensuring that audiences in both urban centers and remote regions can experience the film without subscription hurdles. Industry analysts view this move as a potential game-changer for film distribution in India. If successful, it could prompt other filmmakers to explore direct-to-consumer digital releases, thereby reshaping the post-theatrical landscape. For now, “Sitaare Zameen Par” paves the way for a more inclusive, audience-friendly future in cinema.

“Param Sundari” Motion Poster Unveiled; Release Date Moved to August 29, 2025

Maddock Films on Wednesday unveiled the motion poster for its upcoming cross-cultural romance Param Sundari and announced a new release date of August 29, 2025. In a collaborative Instagram post, leads Janhvi Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra teased audiences with glimpses of their characters’ first encounter. In the motion poster, Sidharth appears as a quintessential North Indian—handsome in a casual shirt, jeans, and a satchel—while Janhvi dazzles in a traditional saree, performing a classical dance pose. The two are shown crossing paths against a scenic backdrop, hinting at a love story where “two worlds collide, and sparks are bound to fly.” The video closes with the tagline: “In cinemas worldwide. 29th August 2025. A Maddock Films Production.” It also reveals that the film’s first single, “Pardesiya,” will drop later today, inviting fans to “feel its soul with the year’s most heartfelt song” within an hour of release. Originally slated for July 25, the film’s new premiere date positions it as one of the season’s biggest romantic offerings. Param Sundari—shot on location in Kerala’s lush backwaters—centers on the romance between a Northern Delhi boy (Malhotra) and a South Indian girl (Kapoor), promising a rollercoaster of laughter, chaos, and unexpected twists, per Maddock’s official synopsis. Producer Dinesh Vijan has likened the project to the classic cross-cultural romances of Mani Ratnam, calling it “like taking ‘Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’ forward” with a fresh, high-tech spin and south-north dynamic that recalls the emotional intensity of Saathiya and the earthy charm of Kantara. Fans can look forward to the film’s blend of heartfelt drama and vibrant music when Param Sundari hits theatres on August 29.
