Teacher Burnt Alive After Robbery of Rs 4 Lakh in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh District

In a tragic incident in Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, a primary school teacher, Rajesh Tripathi, 47, was allegedly robbed of Rs 4 lakh and burnt alive on Thursday night. The incident took place near a canal between Hart and Baroda, under the jurisdiction of Hata police station. Rajesh, a resident of Sunwaha and son of R. P. Tripathi, had reportedly visited Hata and was returning home on his bike carrying the money. According to his brother Mukesh, unidentified assailants intercepted Rajesh, assaulted him, and doused him with petrol before setting him on fire. Rajesh managed to call his brother, informing him about the attack. Mukesh rushed to the scene along with family members to find Rajesh severely burnt, with his bike parked nearby. He was immediately taken to Hata Civil Hospital for initial treatment and later referred to the district hospital due to the severity of his injuries. However, doctors declared him dead after examination. The police have recovered a bike and a bag from the site of the incident. Damoh Superintendent of Police, Shrut Kirti Somavanshi, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing. “We are currently relying on statements from the family and verifying all possible angles,” the officer told TOI. The Hata police are investigating the crime scene, while the Kotwali police have also launched a serious probe into the incident from all directions. The family has formally informed the police about the robbery and murder, and the teacher’s body remains at the district hospital for further procedures.

Sharif Offers Peace Talks Amid Post-Conflict Tensions; India Firm on Terror as Sole Agenda

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday expressed readiness to hold talks with India “for peace,” despite heightened tensions following a recent bout of military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Speaking during a visit to the Kamra air base in Punjab province, Sharif was accompanied by top leaders and defence officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Army Chief Gen Asim Munir, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu. During the visit, he met with soldiers involved in the recent conflict with India and reiterated that any conditions for peace must include resolution of the long-standing Kashmir dispute. Sharif’s comments reflect Pakistan’s continued insistence on bringing the Kashmir issue to the forefront of any peace dialogue. India, however, maintains that Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Ladakh, are integral parts of the country. India has repeatedly rejected third-party involvement or discussion on its internal matters, including Kashmir. Responding firmly to the developments, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on the same day that the only pending issue concerning Kashmir is the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Speaking at the inauguration of the Honduras Embassy, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s stance remains unambiguous and consistent—talks with Pakistan will focus solely on cross-border terrorism and related security concerns. “The prime minister made it very clear that talks with Pakistan will be only on terror,” Jaishankar asserted. He further demanded the extradition of terrorists involved in attacks against India and the dismantling of terror infrastructure operating from within Pakistan. “They know what to do,” he added, indicating that any dialogue would be contingent upon concrete action by Islamabad. The latest confrontation, which prompted Sharif’s statement, began after the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 lives. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6-7, targeting nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, reportedly killing over 100 terrorists. Pakistan retaliated with missile and drone strikes on May 8, 9, and 10, which were met with decisive counterattacks by the Indian armed forces on military sites across Pakistan, including Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian. Despite the conflict and entrenched positions, Sharif’s latest outreach suggests a desire to return to dialogue—though whether substantive progress can be made remains dependent on bridging deep and long-standing trust deficits between the two neighbours.

Escalation in Gaza: Over 120 Killed in Two Days, Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

More than 120 people have been killed in Gaza over the past two nights due to intense Israeli airstrikes, according to Palestinian rescue teams. The southern city of Khan Younis was the worst hit, with over 54 people reported dead in a single night of shelling. Earlier, bombings across northern and southern Gaza on Wednesday claimed at least 70 lives, bringing the two-day death toll to 120. The aid flow to Gaza has been completely halted since March 2. Israel is reportedly using the blockade as a means of pressuring Hamas during ongoing indirect negotiations. Hamas has responded by stating that “the minimum requirement” for any dialogue would be the restoration of humanitarian assistance to the war-affected population. The Israeli military has not issued a statement regarding the latest airstrikes. However, the Gaza health ministry reported that 82 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours alone, including 54 from Khan Younis. As the conflict escalates, the international community is questioning whether intervention is necessary. A growing number of voices are calling for global mediation, especially in light of the ongoing blockade, which has crippled humanitarian efforts. President Donald Trump, currently touring several Gulf nations but notably avoiding a visit to Israel, has sparked hopes of potential diplomatic breakthroughs that could lead to a ceasefire or renewed aid deliveries. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to intensify the military campaign in Gaza, reaffirming his government’s commitment to eliminating Hamas. “With great strength to complete the mission,” Netanyahu declared, emphasizing that the ultimate objective is “the destruction of Hamas.” The humanitarian situation in Gaza has grown increasingly dire. The European Hospital in Khan Younis, the only facility still offering cancer treatments, has been forced to shut down due to extensive damage from airstrikes and inaccessible roads. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), nearly 500,000 Palestinians are at risk of starvation, while close to 1 million are struggling to access basic food supplies. Despite these alarming figures, Israeli government spokesperson David Mencer denied any food shortage in Gaza. He accused Hamas of withholding supplies, saying, “They need to open up the food to the people.” The current crisis stems from the October 7, 2023, attack when Hamas-led militants crossed into southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Since then, Israel’s military response has resulted in the deaths of over 53,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry. Nearly 3,000 of those deaths occurred after a ceasefire was broken on March 18. Hamas is still holding 58 hostages, with 23 believed to be alive. Israeli officials have expressed growing concerns about the health and safety of three of them. As the violence and suffering continue, the call for international intervention to resolve the Gaza conflict is becoming increasingly urgent. 4o

Six Terrorists, Including Jaish Operatives, Killed in Joint Ops in Kashmir: Security Forces Step Up Crackdown

In a significant counter-terror breakthrough, security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have killed six terrorists — including three affiliated with the proscribed outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad — during two major anti-terror operations over the past 48 hours. The operations, conducted jointly by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, and the CRPF, were hailed as a decisive step towards dismantling the terror network operating in the Valley. Addressing a joint press conference, Kashmir Zone Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Birdi confirmed that one of the slain terrorists was Shahid Kuttee, a key figure linked to multiple attacks including one on a German tourist. “He was also involved in terror funding activities,” Birdi added, underlining the broader financial support systems sustaining militancy in the region. He reiterated the commitment of the security forces to eliminating the entire “terror ecosystem.” The operations are being seen as a direct outcome of renewed coordination and strategic recalibration among security forces, following a review in the wake of recent escalations in terror activity. Details of the Operations Major General Dhananjay Joshi, who also addressed the media, gave a detailed account of the two back-to-back operations. The first was carried out on May 12 in the higher reaches of Kelar, based on intelligence inputs about a group of terrorists hiding in the area. Movement was detected the next morning, and a gunbattle ensued after the terrorists opened fire. Three terrorists were neutralised in this exchange. The second encounter took place in a border village in the Tral area after security forces received a specific tip-off. When the area was being cordoned off, the terrorists took positions inside civilian homes and began firing. “The priority was to ensure the safety of the civilians first,” said Maj. Gen. Joshi. After evacuating the residents, forces conducted a systematic search and eliminated all three terrorists hiding in the area. Aftermath of Pahalgam Attack These successful operations come just weeks after the horrific Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 civilians were killed, sparking national outrage. The incident led India to conduct strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), escalating tensions between the two countries. Although a temporary pause in cross-border military actions was later announced, security agencies within J&K have remained on high alert. With these latest encounters, the focus has sharpened on rooting out active terrorist cells and their logistical networks, which continue to pose a threat to peace and security in the region. 4o

Operation Sindoor Not Over Yet, Says Defence Minister Rajnath Singh: “What Happened Was Just a Trailer”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday declared that Operation Sindoor, India’s recent military campaign targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan, is still ongoing. Addressing personnel at an Air Force station, Singh lauded the Indian Air Force (IAF) for its pivotal role in the operation, claiming that several Pakistani air bases and terror camps were decimated. “Operation Sindoor is not over yet. Whatever happened was just a trailer. When the right time comes, we will show the full picture to the world,” Singh said, emphasizing that the campaign was far from finished. He stated that the operation had effectively countered terrorism and significantly damaged the enemy’s capabilities. The Defence Minister underlined the global recognition of the IAF’s efforts, saying, “Indian Air Force assumed a very impactful role in Operation Sindoor and it is being appreciated not only in this country but also in the other countries of the world.” Singh praised Air Chief Marshal AP Singh and his team, highlighting the Air Force’s ability to strike deep into enemy territory and asserting that India now possesses the capability to reach every corner of Pakistan. He further remarked, “Our Air Force has touched the zenith of the sky through its valour and bravery.” He credited the force with the destruction of nine terrorist camps on Pakistani soil and the successful targeting of multiple air bases in follow-up actions. Rajnath Singh also referred to the potency of the indigenous BrahMos missile, stating, “Even Pakistan has accepted the power of BrahMos missile. There is an old saying in our country, ‘Din mein taare dekhna.’ Made in India BrahMos missile showed ‘raat ke andhere mein din ka ujala’ to Pakistan.” He issued a stern warning to Pakistan, suggesting it had been placed “on probation” by India. “If its behavior improves, then okay, otherwise, it will be given the strictest punishment,” Singh warned. The minister also alleged that Pakistan might use a significant portion of its International Monetary Fund (IMF) assistance to bolster terror infrastructure, and called on the IMF to reconsider its funding to the country. Concluding his address, the Defence Minister saluted the spirit of the Indian Air Force, saying, “The world has seen how you destroyed the enemy’s bases. You have made the entire nation believe that ‘Naya Bharat ab sahan nahi karta, balki wah palat kar jawab deta hai.’” He extended his heartfelt gratitude to the armed forces, reiterating the nation’s pride and trust in their capabilities.

Congress Expels Krishna Rao Dixit for Anti-Party Remarks, Praise of PM Modi

The Congress party has expelled senior leader and former Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation, Krishna Rao Dixit (Kallu), for repeatedly criticising party policies and openly praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The disciplinary action follows a series of public statements by Dixit in support of the Prime Minister and in opposition to Congress ideology. The decision came after the party issued a show-cause notice to Dixit, demanding an explanation for his actions. However, instead of responding, Dixit continued to defy the party’s directive—giving interviews to the media and circulating audio messages that further condemned Congress positions. Congress disciplinary committee chief Maharaj Singh Patel had given Dixit three days to reply, but no response was received. On the committee’s recommendation, Dixit was officially removed from the party. Confirming the expulsion, Congress city district president Devendra Sharma stated, “He was warned and given a chance to explain, but he didn’t respond. So we had no choice but to expel him.” Sharma further noted that Dixit had been in close contact with BJP leaders and had even shared the stage with them at various events. “Despite that, the party held back, hoping for a course correction. But as he continued to attack Congress ideology, strict action was taken,” Sharma added. Party insiders say that Dixit has maintained close ties with Jyotiraditya Scindia since the latter’s departure from Congress to join the BJP. It is widely expected that Dixit will formally join the BJP in the coming days, likely in the presence of Scindia or Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav.

India’s Unemployment Rate at 5.1% in April 2025, Shows First Monthly PLFS Report

The country’s unemployment rate stood at 5.1% in April 2025, according to the newly released monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) by the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation. This marks the first time that unemployment data has been released on a monthly basis, as part of efforts to enable real-time monitoring of the labour market. The data, based on the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach, reveals that the overall unemployment rate for persons of all ages was 5.1% last month. Unemployment among men was marginally higher at 5.2%, while it stood at 5% among women. The report highlighted a significantly higher unemployment rate among the youth aged 15–29 years, which stood at 13.8% nationally. Urban areas reported a much higher joblessness rate at 17.2% compared to 12.3% in rural regions. When broken down by gender, unemployment among young women (15–29 years) reached 14.4% across the country, peaking at 23.7% in urban centres and 10.7% in villages. For young men in the same age group, the unemployment rate was recorded at 13.6% nationally, with urban areas at 15% and rural areas at 13%. The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above was estimated at 55.6% in April 2025. Participation in rural areas was higher at 58%, compared to 50.7% in urban areas. Among males aged 15 and above, the LFPR was 79% in rural and 75.3% in urban areas. For females, the LFPR in rural regions was 38.2%. The Worker Population Ratio (WPR), which measures the proportion of employed individuals in the total population, stood at 52.8% at the national level. Rural areas had a WPR of 55.4%, while in urban areas it was 47.4%. Among females aged 15 and above, the WPR was 36.8% in rural and 23.5% in urban areas, with an overall female WPR of 32.5% nationwide. To meet the growing need for high-frequency labour market indicators, the PLFS sampling methodology was revised from January 2025. In April alone, 7,511 first-stage sampling units were surveyed across the country, reflecting a comprehensive national coverage.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation Struggles to Sell Over 1,000 Commercial Properties Worth ₹400 Crore

The Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) is facing a persistent real estate crisis, with over 1,059 commercial properties lying unsold across the city despite repeated auction attempts every 5–6 months. These include shops, commercial halls, and plots spread across key locations like MP Nagar, Bairagarh, Nadra Bus Stand, Kokta Transport Nagar, and New Market. Key Issues Hindering Sales According to BMC’s Revenue Department, the market value of these assets is estimated between ₹300–₹400 crore. Still, efforts to monetize them have largely failed, raising concerns over revenue loss and asset underutilization. Breakdown of Unsold Assets What BMC Officials Say Mayor-In-Council (MIC) member Chhaya Thakur clarified that most properties have been developed recently and are not embroiled in legal disputes. “The sale process is often stalled due to insufficient competition. If there’s only one bidder, the sale is cancelled,” she said, emphasizing the need for improved marketing and investor engagement. Way Forward Urban planners and trade analysts suggest: Until then, these crores-worth of commercial assets remain locked and unused — a costly burden on civic resources and a missed opportunity for urban economic growth.

Supreme Court Criticises Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah Over Remarks Against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi

The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticised BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah for his controversial remarks against Indian Army officer Colonel Sofiya Qureshi. The apex court emphasized that a person holding a constitutional office must exercise restraint and speak with responsibility, especially during sensitive national situations. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice Augustus George Masih made the observations while hearing Shah’s plea seeking a stay on the Madhya Pradesh High Court’s May 14 order. The High Court had directed the registration of an FIR against Shah for his remarks concerning Colonel Qureshi, who had earlier briefed the media about the successful Operation Sindoor against Pakistan. The controversy began after a video of Shah’s speech went viral, sparking backlash on social media. In his clarification, Shah claimed his statement was misunderstood and taken out of context. He stated that he intended to praise Colonel Qureshi’s bravery, saying, “She is above my real sister… If something slipped out in excitement and hurt someone, I apologise from the heart—not once, but ten times.” Despite Shah’s apology and his counsel’s plea for an early hearing and stay on the FIR, the Supreme Court refused to intervene immediately. The court instead posted the matter for a detailed hearing on Friday. CJI Gavai questioned the appropriateness of Shah’s comments, saying, “Such a person holding a constitutional office should be responsible… Just because you are a minister…” Meanwhile, an FIR was registered against Shah under Sections 152, 196(1)(b), and 197(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as directed by the High Court. The court had taken suo motu cognisance of the remarks and ordered immediate legal action. The Supreme Court’s refusal to grant a stay, along with its sharp remarks, has further intensified scrutiny over the minister’s statement and the broader expectations of accountability from elected officials during national crises.
