Iran Looks to China’s J-10C Jets After Russian Su-35 Deal Falters Amid Security Pressures

In the wake of a delayed fighter jet deal with Russia and rising regional tensions, Iran is ramping up negotiations with China to acquire Chengdu J-10C multirole fighter jets in a bid to urgently modernise its ageing air force. The move reflects Tehran’s strategic pivot towards more affordable and quickly deliverable options as it grapples with the fallout from recent aerial offensives and long-standing military constraints. 🔻 What’s Behind the Shift? ✈️ Russian Su-35 Deal Stalled Iran had previously signed a deal with Russia for 50 Su-35 fighter jets in 2023. However, only four aircraft have reportedly been delivered so far. Delays, likely worsened by sanctions, logistical bottlenecks, and the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, have prompted Iran to seek alternatives. 🇨🇳 Why the Chinese J-10C? 💥 Security Tensions Push Urgency The recent joint Israeli-American airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites exposed the inadequacy of Iran’s air defence and fighter response, according to a report in Khorasan. Iran’s air force was unable to react effectively, intensifying pressure on Tehran to rapidly upgrade its aerial capabilities. 📜 Decades-Old Interest Renewed Iran’s interest in the J-10 dates back to 2005, when talks reportedly began for 150 aircraft. However, payment disagreements (with Iran offering oil and gas instead of foreign currency) and a then-active UN arms embargo derailed the deal. Those barriers have since eased, and talks have reportedly resumed in earnest, with Iran now eyeing 36 J-10C jets. 🌍 Geopolitical Implications If finalised, this would mark a significant milestone in China–Iran defence cooperation and could tilt regional power balances, especially as Iran’s rivals — including Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE — continue to modernise their own air forces. The J-10C acquisition could also bolster Iran’s military-industrial partnerships with China, as both nations seek to counterbalance Western influence in the Middle East and beyond. ✅ In Summary This acquisition could mark a turning point for Iran’s struggling air force — and a new chapter in Asian defence dynamics.

Commercial LPG Price Cut by ₹58.50; No Relief Yet for Households

In a welcome move for small businesses, oil marketing companies have reduced the price of 19-kg commercial LPG gas cylinders by ₹58.50, bringing the new rate down to ₹1,723.50, effective from today. This marks the third price cut in recent months — following a ₹24 reduction in June and a ₹7 cut in February, though March saw a minor ₹6 hike. Relief for Hotels, Eateries, and Shops The price drop offers much-needed respite to restaurants, hotels, and small enterprises that heavily depend on LPG for daily operations. A company official confirmed the revision, calling it part of the companies’ dynamic pricing model based on international market trends. No Change in Household LPG Prices Despite repeated calls for a review, there has been no change in the price of the 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder, which continues to affect household budgets. Oil firms reiterated, “There is no change in the prices of 14.2 kg domestic cylinders.” Household Consumption Dominates LPG Use India’s LPG consumption is dominated by household use, accounting for nearly 90% of total LPG usage. The remaining 10% is split across commercial, industrial, and automotive sectors. This often results in domestic prices remaining insulated from fluctuations that affect commercial cylinder rates. Crude Oil Prices Offer Breathing Space One reason for recent LPG price corrections is the fall in global crude oil prices. India’s average crude oil basket price in May 2025 fell to $64.5 per barrel, the lowest in three years. Since LPG prices are linked to 10% of the crude basket, this decline is likely to reduce oil companies’ LPG-related losses by about 45% in FY2026. Domestic LPG Usage Surges India has seen a dramatic rise in LPG penetration, with the number of domestic connections doubling to 33 crore by April 2025, underscoring how vital cooking gas is in daily life across urban and rural India. While businesses benefit from the latest cut, millions of households continue to feel the pinch, awaiting a price relief that is yet to materialise.

Israeli Strikes on Gaza Kill at Least 95, Target Cafe, School, Hospital, and Food Sites

At least 95 Palestinians were killed on Monday following a series of Israeli airstrikes across Gaza, with devastating attacks reported on a seaside cafe, a school sheltering displaced families, food distribution points, and the courtyard of a hospital. The violence marks another bloody chapter in Israel’s 22-month-long war on the besieged enclave. Deadly Strike on Gaza City Cafe Among the worst-hit areas was Al-Baqa cafeteria in northern Gaza City, where 39 people, including women, children, and journalist Ismail Abu Hatab, died in a sudden airstrike. Witnesses described horrific scenes. “We found people torn apart,” said local resident Yahya Sharif. “It was a birthday party. No politics, no military links. Just families trying to find relief from the heat.” The bombing left a large crater and destroyed the entire structure. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud confirmed that no warning was issued before the strike. Attacks on Schools, Food Sites, and Hospitals Elsewhere in Gaza City, at least 13 people were killed at a food distribution warehouse in the Zeitoun neighbourhood. Another Israeli strike hit the Yafa School, which had been sheltering hundreds of displaced people. Evacuation warnings reportedly gave residents just five minutes to flee. In central Gaza, Israeli forces targeted the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital courtyard in Deir el-Balah, where thousands had taken refuge. “The blast was just 10 meters from us,” said Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum. “There was no warning. This hospital has now been targeted at least ten times.” Gaza’s Government Media Office condemned the attack as a “systematic crime” against the territory’s collapsing health system. Attack on Aid Sites in Khan Younis In southern Gaza, at least 15 Palestinians were killed and over 50 wounded while waiting for food at a distribution point operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in Khan Younis. Nearly 600 civilians have been killed in similar aid site attacks since GHF, backed by the U.S. and Israel, took charge of limited deliveries in late May. The Israeli military acknowledged civilians were harmed at these sites and claimed that lessons were being implemented. However, Haaretz reported that Israeli soldiers admitted to deliberately firing at civilians, even when they posed no threat. Forced Displacement and Ground Escalation Reports also indicate Israeli tanks entered the Zeitoun suburb of Gaza City, shelling civilian areas and prompting more evacuation orders in northern Gaza. Over 80% of Gaza’s territory is now either militarised or under displacement threats, according to the United Nations. “Explosions never stopped; they bombed schools and homes. It felt like earthquakes,” said Salah, a father of five from Gaza City. “We keep hearing about a ceasefire in the news, but all we see is death.” The escalating violence, home demolitions in Khan Younis, and renewed forced evacuation warnings have sparked fears of a new ground invasion by Israeli forces. As international talks for a potential ceasefire continue, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with hospitals overwhelmed, food shortages deepening, and civilians left with nowhere safe to turn.

White House Lauds India as Strategic Indo-Pacific Ally; Trade Deal Talks Nearing Final Stage

In a press briefing held on Monday, June 30, 2025, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised India’s growing role as a strategic ally in the Indo-Pacific region. Responding to a question from news agency ANI, Leavitt underscored the strength of the U.S.-India partnership and emphasized the personal rapport between U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific and the President has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and he will continue to have that,” Leavitt said, while addressing concerns about China’s expanding influence in the region. In response to another ANI question regarding the prospects of a trade agreement between the two nations, Leavitt confirmed that a deal is in the final stages of negotiation. “Yes, the President said that last week [that the U.S. and India are very close to a trade deal], and it remains true. I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalising these agreements, and you’ll hear from the President and his trade team very soon when it comes to India,” she said. These remarks follow President Trump’s recent comments expressing cautious optimism about a breakthrough in U.S.-India trade relations. Speaking about reciprocal tariffs, he stated, “India, I think we are going to reach a deal where we have the right to go and do trade. Right now, it’s restricted. You can’t walk in there, you can’t even think about it. We are looking to get a full trade barrier dropping, which is unthinkable and I am not sure that that is going to happen. But as of this moment, we agree that going to India and trade…” With less than two weeks remaining before the critical July 9 deadline, both nations are working intensively to finalize a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) during the ongoing 90-day pause on tariff escalations. Meanwhile, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is in the United States for the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. On Monday, he also inaugurated a UN exhibition titled “The Human Cost of Terrorism,” which highlights the global threat of state-sponsored terrorism. The QUAD, comprising the U.S., India, Japan, and Australia, is a diplomatic coalition committed to ensuring a free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific. Its origins date back to the collaborative humanitarian response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Ukrainian Pilot Ustymenko Dies Steering Damaged Jet Away from Civilians Amid Record Russian Drone Barrage

Ukrainian pilot Ustymenko was posthumously hailed a national hero after sacrificing his life during the largest single-night Russian air attack in over three years of war. Ustymenko successfully shot down seven drones and missiles before his aircraft was critically damaged. Despite losing control, he steered his jet away from populated areas, avoiding civilian casualties, but had no time to eject and died in the crash. The overnight attack saw 537 drones and missiles launched by Russia, a grim record since the full-scale invasion began. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 211 drones and 38 missiles, but 226 projectiles bypassed defenses through electronic jamming or decoy tactics. At least 12 civilians, including children, were injured in the widespread strikes that hit six regions. In Cherkasy, missiles struck apartment buildings and a college, prompting emergency evacuations. In Lviv, drone strikes caused power outages after hitting an industrial facility. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Ustymenko Ukraine’s highest honor, calling him a skilled aviator who had defended Ukraine since 2014 and mastered four different aircraft types. The incident underscored the urgency of Ukraine’s need for advanced air defense systems, especially as Russia escalates with swarming attacks. This week alone, Russia has launched 1,270 drones, 114 missiles, and 1,100 glide bombs, according to Ukrainian military data. In a fresh appeal, Zelenskyy called on the United States and Western allies to provide Patriot missile systems, stressing that Ukraine is ready to purchase them but needs political support from Washington, where President Trump has shown reluctance on advancing further aid. Meanwhile, Russia claimed gains on the ground, announcing the capture of Novoukrainka village in Donetsk and the downing of Ukrainian drones in border areas. The war has also taken a toll on Ukraine’s modern air fleet, with Ustymenko’s death marking the third loss of an F-16 fighter jet since August 2024. Analysts have warned that while F-16s are effective against fast, high-altitude targets, they are less suited for combating cheap, low-flying drone swarms, which Russia increasingly uses to exhaust Ukraine’s defenses. As Kyiv mourns the loss of a brave pilot, the scale and intensity of the attack serve as a stark reminder of the growing pressure on Ukraine’s stretched air defense systems and the political stalemates threatening crucial military support.

Ladakh UT Notifies ALC Areas and Amends Reservation Rules to Align with Central Laws

The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has officially notified specific villages as “Areas Adjoining the Actual Line of Control (ALC)” under the provisions of the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation Act, 2004, as amended by the Ladakh Reservation (Amendment) Regulation, 2025. This declaration, published in the Official Gazette of Ladakh, will enable residents of these designated areas to avail reservation benefits as per the revised Ladakh Reservation Rules. According to the notification, 18 revenue villages in Leh district located along the Line of Control (LoC) and Line of Actual Control (LAC), and 34 revenue villages in Kargil district situated along the LoC, have been notified as ALC areas. Officials stated that this long-awaited move addresses a key concern for many border residents, who have been seeking official recognition and support through reservation benefits. The decision follows a detailed process initiated by the Ladakh Administration, which appointed a One-Member Commission under the chairmanship of Justice (Retired) Bansi Lal Bhat, former Judge of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. The Commission was tasked with identifying villages and hamlets situated along the ALC for the purpose of inclusion under the reservation policy. After submitting its final report in December 2024, an Internal Committee reviewed the findings and recommended the list of areas, which has now been officially accepted by the UT administration. A day prior to this notification, the Ladakh administration also introduced a fresh recruitment and reservation policy through the issuance of the Ladakh Reservation (Amendment) Rules, 2025. These amendments restructure the reservation quotas and recruitment procedures to align with central legislations, particularly the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. Chief Secretary Dr. Pawan Kotwal highlighted that the revised rules aim to update outdated legal terminology, streamline the recruitment process, and ensure that reservation quotas reflect contemporary socio-economic realities. Under the amended rules for direct recruitment, the reservation quotas include one percent for Scheduled Castes (SCs), 80 percent for Scheduled Tribes (STs), four percent for residents of ALC areas, and 10 percent for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). Horizontal reservations have also been restructured to provide six percent reservation for ex-servicemen and four percent for persons with benchmark disabilities, subdivided in accordance with definitions under the Disabilities Act. Michael D’Souza, Secretary of the General Administration Department, announced further procedural reforms. The preparation of select lists will now follow a structured three-list approach to ensure transparency, incorporating unreserved and reserved categories, horizontal reservations, and merit-based seniority. Additionally, unfilled EWS vacancies will be converted into unreserved slots, and backlogs in reserved categories will be maintained and monitored. The amended rules also revise the roster management system, introducing a 100-point running roster for every service, cadre, and grade. For promotions, amended Rule 9 now provides one percent reservation for SCs and 84 percent for STs. These measures, the administration claims, mark a significant milestone in redressing long-pending demands of Ladakh’s youth and ensuring that recruitment and reservation policies are equitable and legally robust.

Trump Hints at Gaza Ceasefire Deal Within a Week, Announces Aid Boost Amid Rising Civilian Toll

Washington D.C., June 27, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Friday that a new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas could be reached within the coming week, amid escalating international concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. “We think within the next week, we’re going to get a ceasefire,” Trump told reporters at the White House, during a high-level diplomatic meeting with African foreign ministers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda. The comments come after months of renewed hostilities, which resumed in March 2025 when Israel declared an end to the previous ceasefire, accusing Hamas of regrouping. That truce, brokered with U.S. support during the final days of former President Joe Biden’s administration, had brought temporary relief following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack that sparked the conflict. Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Since March, Israel halted all humanitarian supplies — including food and medicine — into Gaza for over two months, triggering widespread famine warnings from aid agencies. The blockade has resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, especially among children, according to independent observers. In response, Israel recently permitted limited aid access through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, a controversial joint operation involving U.S. security contractors and Israeli military oversight. However, witnesses and Gaza officials allege that Palestinians have been killed while waiting for aid, raising serious human rights concerns. On Thursday (June 26), the U.S. announced $30 million in funding to support the aid initiative. “We’re supplying, as you know, a lot of money and a lot of food to that area,” Trump said Friday. “We’re involved because people are dying. And look at those crowds of people that have no food, no anything.” Mounting Criticism Over Israeli Tactics Israeli newspaper Haaretz published an explosive report quoting anonymous Israeli soldiers, who claimed they were ordered by commanders to fire at unarmed Palestinian crowds near aid centers to disperse them. The report adds to international scrutiny over Israel’s handling of the crisis. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied these allegations, calling them “false and harmful” to the morale of the Israeli Defense Forces. Ceasefire Prospects and Diplomatic Pressure The potential ceasefire comes amid increased U.S. diplomatic pressure and mounting concern among allies over the humanitarian toll and regional instability. The Trump administration, which had initially taken a hardline stance in support of Israel, has quietly shifted towards brokering renewed talks in recent weeks. Officials familiar with the negotiations say that Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey are also involved behind the scenes in shaping the terms of a possible agreement. Sources indicate that key demands on both sides — including hostage releases and a phased Israeli withdrawal — are being debated. If finalized, the ceasefire would be the second major truce in the nearly two-year-old conflict, and would mark a significant diplomatic achievement for the Trump administration early in his second term.
