NASA: Asteroid 2024 YR4 Could Hit the Moon in 2032, Not Earth

NASA has confirmed that asteroid 2024 YR4, which sparked concern in late 2024 over a potential Earth impact, is now being monitored for a possible collision with the Moon in 2032. While the odds remain low, the asteroid’s probability of impacting the Moon has increased slightly from 3.8% to 4.3%, based on refined trajectory data. 🪨 What Is Asteroid 2024 YR4? 📅 Potential Moon Impact: December 22, 2032 Using data from JWST, scientists at NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) have narrowed down the asteroid’s orbit with 20% greater precision. The projected flyby date of December 22, 2032, carries a slim chance of the asteroid striking the Moon — but no threat to Earth is currently predicted. NASA emphasized that: “Even if an impact occurs, it would not affect the Moon’s orbit or pose a threat to Earth.” 🔭 Astronomers Weigh In Pawan Kumar, an astronomer and former researcher at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, echoed NASA’s calm assessment: “The Moon is safe. Even if there’s a collision, the debris would pose no threat to Earth. Any fragments reaching near-Earth space would disintegrate in our atmosphere.” 🌍 Was 2024 YR4 Ever a Threat to Earth? Yes — briefly. In late 2024, there were early concerns that YR4 might pose a small threat to Earth. But further observations ruled out any significant impact risk, shifting attention to its proximity to the Moon instead. 🔭 What Happens Next? 📷 Webb’s Historic Observation “The @ESA_Webb space telescope has spotted asteroid 2024 YR4!”“Webb’s observations indicate that the asteroid measures roughly 60 m across, making it the smallest object targeted by Webb to date.”— ESA Operations, April 2, 2025 This marks a milestone for the James Webb Space Telescope, showcasing its ability to detect and track even small moving objects deep in space. 🧠 Bottom Line Stay tuned — the next significant tracking update is expected closer to the mid-2030 window.

Vande Bharat Express on Katra–Srinagar Route Fully Booked for 10 Days Amid Overwhelming Public Response

The newly launched Vande Bharat Express connecting Katra to Srinagar has received an enthusiastic reception, with railway authorities confirming that the train is fully booked for the next 10 days. The service, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, represents a transformative step in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, seamlessly linking the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India via high-speed rail. According to Jugal Kishor Sharma, Station Superintendent at Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station, the response has been “overwhelming.” He said, “There are no seats available for the next 10 days. People are very excited to travel on this route, and there’s a long waiting list.” Cutting Travel Time, Connecting Cultures The Vande Bharat Express reduces the Katra–Srinagar journey to just three hours, shaving off two to three hours compared to existing travel options. The route is particularly significant as it connects Katra, a renowned pilgrimage site, with Srinagar, the cultural heart of Jammu and Kashmir. Railway staff are working “round-the-clock” to accommodate the surge in passengers, ensuring smooth operations and passenger comfort, Sharma added. Engineering Marvels Along the Route The train journey offers more than speed — it’s also a visual and emotional experience. It passes over two iconic bridges: These engineering landmarks symbolise India’s technological prowess and the integration of Kashmir’s challenging terrain into the national transportation network. Emotional and Political Milestone Prominent political leaders were quick to highlight the train’s significance. Former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, who was among the first passengers, became emotional during the ride. “My eyes became teary when the train crossed the Chenab Bridge. It’s the biggest gift for the people of the Union Territory,” he said. Minister Satish Sharma described the launch as a “historic moment”, celebrating it as a long-awaited development that enhances accessibility and breaks the monopoly of air travel in the region. “It offers people a more affordable and reliable alternative,” he stated. A Boost to Tourism and Integration The train’s popularity reflects a growing demand for modern, efficient transport in Jammu and Kashmir. Besides offering greater convenience, it is expected to boost tourism, facilitate pilgrimage, and strengthen socio-economic ties between the region and the rest of the country. The Vande Bharat’s debut on this strategically important route marks not just a logistical achievement but a symbol of national unity and progress, bridging distances—both literal and emotional—between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India.

Chad Suspends Visas for U.S. Citizens in Retaliation to Trump’s Renewed Travel Ban

In a swift and symbolic act of diplomatic retaliation, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby announced the suspension of visa issuance for U.S. citizens, following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s reimposition of a travel ban targeting 12 countries, including Chad. 🔴 What Happened? On Wednesday, Trump reinstated a controversial policy from his first presidential term, citing “deficient screening and vetting procedures” and refusal by certain nations to accept deported nationals. The 12 countries affected by the new ban are: The new ban also includes heightened restrictions on visitors from seven other nations and is set to take effect from Monday at 12:01 a.m. In response, President Deby declared via Facebook that Chad would invoke the principle of reciprocity and suspend U.S. visas, making it clear that while Chad lacks vast resources, “Chad has his dignity and pride.” 🌍 Regional Reactions: African nations—seven of which are included in the ban—are responding in varied ways: ⚖️ Diplomatic Fallout: This development threatens to deepen tensions between the U.S. and several African nations, at a time when global geopolitical alliances are shifting. Chad’s bold move underscores growing frustration in parts of the Global South over perceived unilateral and discriminatory visa policies. Analysts warn that the decision could affect military cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and regional diplomatic goodwill, especially in areas where U.S. presence or aid remains critical. ⏭️ What’s Next? The reciprocal visa suspension by Chad is currently indefinite, with no clear path to reversal unless the U.S. revisits or clarifies its policy. With diplomatic channels expected to be activated behind the scenes, attention will now turn to whether other affected nations will follow Chad’s lead—or opt for more conciliatory approaches like Sierra Leone. This incident once again highlights how visa policies can ripple far beyond immigration, shaping relationships, national pride, and international power dynamics.

NASA’s Mars Odyssey Captures Stunning Image of Arsia Mons Above Martian Clouds

In a breathtaking cosmic snapshot, NASA’s 2001 Mars Odyssey orbiter has captured Arsia Mons, one of Mars’ tallest volcanoes, appearing to rise majestically above a veil of greenish atmospheric haze. The image was taken just before dawn on May 2, 2025, offering a rare and awe-inspiring glimpse of the Red Planet’s horizon. The photograph presents a scene eerily reminiscent of Earth — a massive peak breaking through morning clouds — but it’s on Mars, highlighting the alien beauty of our planetary neighbor. The volcano, Arsia Mons, towers roughly 20 kilometers high and stretches over 400 kilometers wide, making it one of the solar system’s largest. A New Angle on the Red Planet This unique image was made possible when Odyssey’s THEMIS (Thermal Emission Imaging System) instrument pivoted 90 degrees to capture a side-on view of the Martian atmosphere and surface. Although THEMIS was originally designed to study surface composition, scientists began repurposing it in 2023 to explore Mars’ upper atmosphere by photographing the horizon. By doing so, researchers can now observe seasonal variations in clouds and dust, offering valuable clues about atmospheric dynamics on Mars — data crucial for future manned missions and climate studies. With this latest achievement, Mars Odyssey, the longest-serving spacecraft in orbit around another planet, continues to expand humanity’s understanding of Mars, not just from above, but from perspectives that mirror the view astronauts might one day see.

Saudi Arabia Suspends Block Work Visas for 14 Countries Ahead of Hajj 2025, Citing Security and Administrative Concerns

In a significant policy shift ahead of the Hajj 2025 pilgrimage, Saudi Arabia has temporarily suspended the issuance of block work visas for citizens from 14 countries, including India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, and Turkey. The decision, effective from May 2025, is reportedly driven by security and administrative concerns, particularly regarding the misuse of visas for unauthorized Hajj participation. Affected Countries: What Are Block Work Visas? Block work visas are typically bulk pre-approved visas issued by Saudi authorities to Gulf-based companies, allowing them to hire foreign workers—commonly for domestic work, hospitality, and construction sectors. These visas form the backbone of workforce planning for many companies, especially during seasonal spikes in labour demand. The suspension has alarmed employers who rely on this hiring model, particularly those engaged in preparation for the high-demand Hajj season. Industries that depend on short-term labour influxes may now face significant disruptions. Unauthorised Hajj Entry: A Core Issue The main concern, according to sources, is the rising trend of individuals entering the Kingdom on work, visit, or Umrah visas and then participating in the Hajj without the required Hajj permit. This practice created serious crowding and overwhelmed health and safety infrastructure during the 2024 pilgrimage. To prevent similar challenges this year, Saudi authorities have opted to enforce stricter visa and entry controls, aiming to ensure that only those with valid, official Hajj visas are allowed to undertake the pilgrimage. Although no formal statement has been released by Saudi officials, the suspension aligns with the Kingdom’s broader objective of maintaining order, safety, and proper logistical management during one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings. Labour Market Implications The temporary ban has no defined timeline for resumption, creating uncertainty for companies that rely on semi-skilled and seasonal workers from the affected countries. Employers may now be compelled to: The move could also impact remittance flows and migrant workers’ job prospects in affected countries, especially during the peak Hajj and summer employment season. Looking Ahead While the policy aims to tighten control over pilgrimage management, it has sparked concerns over transparency and timing, especially in labour-supplying nations. It remains to be seen whether the Kingdom will provide further clarity or introduce alternative pathways for worker mobility in the coming months. As the Hajj approaches, this decision underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to ensuring a safe and streamlined pilgrimage, even if it comes at a temporary cost to labour market flexibility.

AC Local Trains in Mumbai Hit by Ticketless Crowding: Railways Deploy Dedicated Squad to Restore Punctuality

Mumbai, June 8, 2025 — Ticketless commuters are increasingly crowding Mumbai’s air-conditioned (AC) local trains, especially during peak hours, causing serious disruptions. Overcrowding at the doors—particularly by those without valid tickets—is preventing automatic doors from closing, thereby delaying departures and affecting the punctuality of services across the Western Railway (WR) network. In response, WR has deployed a dedicated 15-member squad of ticket checkers (TCs) exclusively for AC local trains. This team has been actively patrolling AC coaches since May 30, issuing fines and clearing out footboard squatters to restore smooth operations. “We observe daily that commuters block the doors, especially between Borivali and Virar, preventing the train from moving. This causes a domino effect across the entire line,” a senior WR official said. Over just one week—from May 30 to June 5—the squad fined 709 ticketless travellers, collecting over ₹2.30 lakh in penalties. The railway now plans to expand the squad to cover more trains and hours. The Delay Chain AC locals have automatic doors that must close fully before the train can depart. When overcrowded by unauthorised passengers—many hanging near or on the footboard—doors remain ajar, triggering system delays. These delays typically add 10 minutes or more during peak traffic hours, affecting up to 10% of the 40-50 delayed trains daily on WR lines. Currently, WR operates 1,406 services daily, with 109 being AC local services on weekdays and 65 on weekends. Public Reaction & Long-Term Solutions Railway passenger associations have lauded the effort. Kailash Verma, president of the Maharashtra Railway Commuters Council, said, “Those without tickets have become a menace. People with valid AC tickets or passes don’t get seats because of them.” However, Nandkumar Deshmukh, president of the Federation of Suburban Railway Passengers Association, added a different perspective: “People often board AC locals without tickets out of desperation. If the railway increased the number of AC trains and reduced fares, it would ease the pressure.” The incident at Borivali station on October 3, 2022, remains a stark reminder. That day, packed AC trains stalled until police intervened and cleared the doors—highlighting the importance of enforcement for smooth operations. As Mumbai’s commuter load grows, discipline and better management of AC services will be crucial to ensuring that punctuality, comfort, and safety go hand in hand.

Trump Reinstates Travel Ban on 12 Countries, Adds Restrictions on 7 More Amid National Security Review

In a sweeping move citing national security concerns, former U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the reinstatement of a travel ban affecting 12 countries, along with new travel restrictions for citizens from seven others. The restrictions are set to take effect from Monday at 12:01 AM, according to an official White House statement. The countries facing a renewed travel ban include:Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. In addition, new restrictions are being imposed on travelers from:Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela. “This is about keeping America safe,” Trump declared. “I must act to protect the national security and national interest of the United States and its people.” According to the presidential declaration, the decision was based on a comprehensive review of visa overstay rates, the strength of civil documentation systems, and the level of cooperation these countries maintain with U.S. immigration and security agencies. Trump asserted that several of the affected nations fail to screen travelers adequately or refuse to accept deported nationals, posing a potential threat to U.S. interests. The announcement comes in the wake of a terrorist attack on June 1, 2025, at the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, Colorado, in which the suspect was reportedly an Egyptian national who had overstayed a tourist visa. In a video message posted on social media, Trump referenced the incident as evidence of weak immigration controls and emphasized the need for stricter vetting. The current policy stems from a January 20 executive order, directing the State Department, Department of Homeland Security, and the Director of National Intelligence to reassess countries based on what the Trump administration termed “hostile attitudes” toward the U.S. and their overall security cooperation. Notably, this move mirrors Trump’s controversial 2017 travel ban, which initially barred citizens of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. That order sparked nationwide protests, legal battles, and widespread backlash before it was revised and ultimately upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. While the current list has expanded, reports suggest that Pakistan, Syria, and up to 41 other countries could also face future repercussions if found to be non-compliant in upcoming assessments. The Department of Homeland Security is expected to release additional details in the coming weeks.

Three Punjabi Youth Held Captive in Iran by Traffickers, Families Face Extortion Demands

A distressing case has emerged involving three youngsters from Punjab—hailing from Hoshiarpur, Sangrur, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar districts—who have been held captive in Iran by traffickers demanding large sums of money from their families for their release. The youths were reportedly duped by illegal travel agents promising work visas for Australia. Gurdip Kaur, mother of 23-year-old Amritpal Singh from Bhagowal, lodged a complaint with the police stating that two agents from Piplanwala, brothers Dheeraj and Kamal Attwal, had lured her son with the promise of securing a work permit visa for Australia. She said they took ₹18 lakh as an advance payment. Amritpal, along with Husanpreet Singh from Sangrur and Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, boarded a flight from Delhi on May 1. On May 2, Amritpal called his mother from Iran to inform her that he had reached the country and would soon be sent to Australia. However, within an hour, he called again to say that he and the other two had been held captive by traffickers who claimed they had not been paid by the agents and were demanding hefty sums from the families. Gurdip described how the traffickers made video calls from the youths’ phones while brutally beating them, insisting that each family transfer ₹18 lakh via MoneyGram for their release. When her family tried to contact the travel agents for help, they found that the agents had fled and their phones were switched off. Following her complaint, the Model Town police registered an FIR against the accused agents and one of their employees. According to Station House Officer Gursahib Singh, efforts are underway to arrest the absconding agents, though no arrests have been made yet.
