50% Airfare Reduction for Kumbh Mela Travelers Announced
In a major relief for pilgrims traveling to the Kumbh Mela, Civil Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu has announced a 50% reduction in airfares for passengers flying to Prayagraj. The new fares came into effect today, following multiple discussions with airline operators. Government’s Intervention in Airfare Regulation To ensure affordable travel for devotees, the government held three meetings with airlines before enforcing the fare cut. Airlines were reminded of the historical significance of the Kumbh Mela, which occurs once every 140 years, and were urged to support the event. At the same time, the government has taken steps to protect airlines from financial losses resulting from the reduced ticket prices. DGCA’s Efforts to Control Rising Airfares Prior to this, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had already stepped in to regulate soaring airfares for flights to Prayagraj. On January 23, DGCA officials met with airline representatives, urging them to rationalize ticket prices for Kumbh Mela travelers. To accommodate the massive influx of passengers, 81 additional flights were approved for Prayagraj in January 2025, bringing the total number of flights operating to and from the city to 132. However, despite the increased capacity, airfare surged dramatically, with Delhi-Prayagraj ticket prices skyrocketing 21 times their usual rate, causing widespread concern. Unprecedented Footfall at Kumbh Mela 2025 The Maha Kumbh Mela, which commenced on January 13, is witnessing unprecedented attendance, with the total footfall surpassing 199.4 million visitors. The surge in devotees has led to extreme crowding, with a stampede earlier this week at key bathing ghats due to the overwhelming rush. The religious gathering will conclude on February 26, and with the new reduced airfare, more pilgrims are expected to benefit from affordable travel options.
