Man Impersonating Naval Personnel Steals Rifle from Navy Nagar, Probe Underway
Mumbai witnessed a major security breach last Saturday when an unidentified man, dressed in naval uniform, gained entry into Navy Nagar — a high-security residential area in Colaba — and fled with an INSAS rifle along with two magazines loaded with 40 live cartridges. The incident has triggered serious concerns over security protocols at the military establishment. According to officials, the impersonator approached a junior sailor on sentry duty around 7:30 pm, claiming that he was his replacement for the next shift. Believing the stranger, the sailor handed over his service weapon and magazines before leaving for his hostel. An hour later, when the sailor returned to collect his watch, he found the man missing. Alarmed, he searched the area for nearly three hours before reporting the matter to his superiors. A search operation was immediately launched in and around Navy Nagar but yielded no trace of the suspect. The Navy then approached Cuffe Parade police, who registered an FIR for theft. Multiple agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), have joined the probe. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage to trace the suspect’s movements and are probing whether he had prior knowledge of duty timings or simply exploited procedural lapses. The Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the incident and is coordinating with local police to recover the stolen weapon. Meanwhile, a sketch of the suspect has been prepared based on the description provided by the junior sailor. Officials admitted that the ease with which the guard was misled into handing over his rifle has left both the Navy and security agencies embarrassed, raising questions about standard operating procedures in sensitive military areas.
