Ambani Faces Investor Spotlight Amid US Tariffs, Russian Oil Tensions

Mumbai, August 29, 2025 — Reliance Industries Ltd.’s annual investor meeting, a red-letter event in India’s financial calendar, will this year see attention divided between future growth plans and geopolitical headwinds. Traditionally a stage for Chairman Mukesh Ambani to unveil ambitious targets, bold ventures, and shareholder rewards, the gathering on Friday comes just two days after the US doubled tariffs on India in retaliation for imports of discounted Russian oil — a trade in which Reliance has been a key participant. Russian Oil Bind Reliance has purchased large volumes of Russian crude under a 10-year deal with Rosneft Oil Co PJSC, helping India save an estimated $3.8 billion in FY25, according to ICRA. Bloomberg calculations suggest Reliance alone saved about $571 million in the first six months of 2025. But that advantage comes at a cost: Reliance’s $214 billion empire now faces exposure to tariffs, possible US sanctions, and reputational risks. Nayara Energy, which operates a refinery near Reliance’s Jamnagar complex, was blacklisted by the EU in July, serving as a cautionary example. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has resisted US pressure, insisting Russian oil is not sanctioned. A withdrawal, however, would rupture Reliance’s long-term deal and erode its refining edge. Ambani’s Speech: Focus on Future, Not Russia Despite heightened scrutiny, Ambani’s much-anticipated address is expected to sidestep Russia, focusing instead on: Reliance did not respond to queries from Bloomberg on whether Ambani would address the oil issue. US Pressure Mounts Senior US officials have intensified criticism, with White House trade adviser Peter Navarro accusing India of funding Russia’s “war machine.” While Ambani has not been named, US statements targeting “India’s richest families” underscore the stakes. “Will commitments on reduction of Russian oil purchases and shifting to US sources be enough for the Trump administration?” asked Mark Linscott of The Asia Group. “It’s hard to know, given how difficult it is to read its objectives.” Oil Still Pays for Diversification Though Reliance has pivoted toward consumer businesses and green energy, its oil, gas, and chemicals arm still generates over half of annual revenue and two-fifths of profit (EBITDA). The refining segment’s contribution was surpassed only recently by digital services. The Russian oil discount, therefore, remains a crucial pillar funding Reliance’s transformation — even as it draws Ambani into the geopolitical crossfire.

Rahul Gandhi Accuses PM Modi of ‘Vote Theft’, Says Bihar Has Shaken His Confidence

Motihari/Sitamarhi, August 29, 2025:Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of being “scared” after his alleged vote theft was exposed. “PM Modi dare hue hain (PM Modi is scared) because he knows his vote theft has been caught and now he cannot escape,” Rahul said while addressing the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan during his Voter Adhikar Yatra in Motihari, East Champaran. “Vote Theft Is an Attack on the Constitution” Rahul claimed the Prime Minister’s silence on the matter was proof of guilt.“Modi is keeping quiet because I have caught his vote theft. Why is the Prime Minister silent on this issue?” he asked. Calling vote theft an attack on the Constitution, the Congress leader asserted he would not allow it to continue. “The people of Bihar have shaken Modi’s confidence,” he declared. Allegations of Voter List Manipulation Rahul further alleged that the BJP had systematically deleted names of marginalized communities from electoral rolls.“In Sitamarhi, they deleted 6.5 million voters’ names during the Special Intensive Revision. Only Dalits, OBCs, EBCs, the poor and minorities have been removed — no rich person’s name has been deleted,” he said. He accused the BJP of planning to replace these names with “fake voters”, citing a similar strategy in Maharashtra where “10 million fake voters were added” to secure electoral victory. Tejashwi Yadav Joins Attack RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, sharing the stage with Rahul, echoed the allegations. He accused the BJP of not just stealing votes but attempting to erase the identity of OBCs, EBCs, Dalits, Mahadalits, and Adivasis. Expressing pride in his father Lalu Prasad Yadav’s legacy, Tejashwi said, “Before 1990, weaker castes were mistreated. Lalu brought social awakening. Today leaders from backward communities can become chief ministers because of his struggles. Even Nitish Kumar is CM because of Lalu.” He also predicted that the upcoming assembly polls would be Nitish Kumar’s last election. INDIA Bloc’s Voter Adhikar Yatra Rahul Gandhi resumed his Voter Adhikar Yatra from Sitamarhi on Thursday, accompanied by INDIA bloc leaders Tejashwi Yadav (RJD), Dipankar Bhattacharya (CPI-ML), and Mukesh Sahani (VIP). Before the march, Rahul offered prayers at Maa Janki Temple in Sitamarhi. The Yatra is set to enter West Champaran district on Friday.

PM Modi Will Not Retire At 75, Says RSS Chief Bhagwat; BJP Dismisses Speculation

New Delhi, August 29, 2025: Speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will retire after turning 75 on September 17 has been firmly dismissed by both the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who turns 75 just days before the Prime Minister, clarified Thursday that there is no retirement rule linked to age within the Sangh or the BJP. “I never said I will retire or that someone else should retire when they turn 75. In the Sangh, we are swayamsevaks… we are given a job, whether we want it or not. I will continue even if I am 80 years old,” he said, as the RSS marks its centenary year. BJP Rejects ‘75-Year Rule’ Theory The BJP has repeatedly denied speculation about an internal rule forcing leaders over 75 to step aside. The government itself includes senior leaders above that mark, including 80-year-old Jitan Ram Manjhi, the MSME Minister. Home Minister Amit Shah had also clarified last year that “there is no provision regarding age, anywhere in the Constitution of the BJP.” The 75-year cut-off, Shah said, was a 2019 electoral decision when the party did not field candidates older than that age, leading to veterans like LK Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi being sidelined. Opposition Keeps Taunting Despite clarifications, the opposition has kept targeting Mr Modi on the issue. AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal claimed last year that Modi was “seeking votes to make Amit Shah the next Prime Minister,” while Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut recently alleged Modi’s visit to Nagpur — his first to RSS headquarters in 11 years — was linked to writing his “retirement application.” The BJP hit back swiftly. Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the talk, declaring: “In 2029 we will see Modi as Prime Minister again.” RSS Jabs BJP Over Party President Delay Meanwhile, the RSS did aim a light jab at the BJP over its ongoing search for a new national president, widely expected before the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls. Asked if the RSS was controlling the process, Bhagwat replied: “If we were deciding, it wouldn’t have taken so long.” According to party sources, the delay has been due to wide consultations with senior leaders of both BJP and RSS, but a final decision is expected soon.

Maratha Quota Leader Manoj Jarange Begins Indefinite Hunger Strike at Azad Maidan

Mumbai, August 29, 2025: Maratha quota movement leader Manoj Jarange began his indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai on Friday, declaring that he would not withdraw until the government meets the community’s demands for reservation. Jarange, 43, was welcomed by thousands of supporters clad in saffron caps, scarves and flags when he reached the venue around 9:45 a.m. “I will not go back until our demands are met. Even if I am shot dead, I will not retreat,” he told the gathering. Call for Peaceful Agitation Addressing his supporters, Jarange blamed the government’s “lack of cooperation” for forcing the Maratha community to march to Mumbai. He urged followers to cooperate with police, avoid disrupting traffic, and not block city roads. “Clear the streets in two hours and ensure Mumbaikars are not troubled. Those who want to leave the city today can do so,” he appealed. The activist also asked his supporters to park vehicles in designated areas and stressed that their agitation would not disrupt the ongoing Ganesh festival celebrations in Mumbai. Demand for Quota Jarange has been demanding 10% reservation for Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. He insists that all Marathas be recognized as Kunbis, an agrarian caste listed under OBC, making them eligible for quotas in government jobs and education. “We want the government to grant us reservation and accept all our demands. You can shoot me or put me in jail. I will rot in jail but will not move till our demands are met,” Jarange said, while seeking more time from authorities to continue his protest. Heavy Security Deployment The march, which began at Jarange’s native Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district on Wednesday, reached Mumbai on Friday morning. Supporters gave him a rousing welcome at Vashi before he proceeded to Azad Maidan. Police permitted the march under 40 strict conditions, barring slogans that could create law-and-order issues and instructing agitators not to disrupt traffic. Despite this, heavy traffic congestion was reported near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) after protesters spilled onto the roads. The Mumbai police have granted permission for protests at Azad Maidan only for August 29, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., with restrictions that no more than 5,000 protesters gather at the venue and only five vehicles be allowed inside. To maintain law and order, over 1,500 police personnel have been deployed at Azad Maidan, while security has been tightened at CSMT and surrounding areas where large numbers of Maratha supporters have arrived from across Maharashtra.

RC Bhargava Bats for Lower GST as US Tariffs Hit Indian Industries

At Maruti Suzuki’s annual general meeting, Chairman RC Bhargava urged the government to expedite GST reforms, warning that fresh US tariffs could disrupt multiple Indian industries and erode the purchasing power of small car buyers. To be sure, the Narendra Modi government has already proposed lowering the GST on Maruti Suzuki’s bestselling small cars. However, the additional US import duties—effective 27 August—have raised total tariffs to as high as 50% on goods like garments, gems and jewellery, footwear, sporting goods, furniture and chemicals. The move threatens thousands of small exporters and jobs, a vital customer base for the carmaker. In his Independence Day address on 15 August 2025, Prime Minister Modi announced India’s biggest tax overhaul since the rollout of GST in 2017. Consumer, auto and insurance firms are expected to benefit most when product prices fall from October. The Centre has suggested cutting GST on small cars from 28% to 18%, while insurance premiums could see rates drop from 18% to as low as 5%—or even zero.

Minneapolis School Shooting: Attacker Scrawled ‘Kill Trump’ and ‘Nuke India’ on Weapons

Two students were killed Wednesday after a 23-year-old gunman opened fire on children attending Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, authorities said. The attacker, identified as Robin Westman, used a rifle, shotgun, and pistol in the assault before dying from what officials believe was a self-inflicted gunshot in the school’s parking lot. Videos recovered from Westman’s now-deleted YouTube channel revealed disturbing details. One clip showed a cache of weapons and magazines marked with messages including “Kill Donald Trump,” “Nuke India,” “Israel must fall,” and “For the children.” Other scrawled phrases read “Where is your God?” and referenced past school shooters. Westman also recorded a letter apologizing to family members for the impending attack. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the authenticity of the videos, calling the shooter a “deeply sick murderer” who “targeted our most vulnerable: young children praying in their first morning Mass of the school year.” She said the writings highlighted the ideological and violent nature of the attack. Investigators said Westman had legally purchased the firearms and had no criminal record. The shooter, born Robert Westman, legally changed names in 2020 and identified as transgender. Officials emphasized that the attacker acted alone. President Donald Trump ordered flags flown at half-staff nationwide in mourning. The Annunciation Catholic School tragedy marked the 146th school shooting in the United States this year, reigniting debates on gun laws and school security.
