Amul Clarifies Origins of Iconic Mascot After Viral Video Claims Link to Shashi Tharoor’s Sister

The Amul Girl, India’s most famous advertising mascot, has returned to the spotlight—this time not for her witty one-liners but over a viral claim about her inspiration. A video by marketing consultant Dr Sanjay Arora suggested that the blue-haired, polka-dot wearing Amul Girl was inspired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s sister, Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan. The reel, captioned “the queen of puns came from the sister of the king of vocabulary,” garnered millions of views on Instagram. Shobha herself responded on X, saying: “Yes, I was the first Amul baby. Yes, #ShyamBenegal took the photos. My sister Smita was in the 2nd colour campaign. We may have [inspired it]. But we don’t know.” However, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets Amul, denied the claim. “We wish to clarify that the Amul Girl illustration is not influenced by Ms Shobha Tharoor. She was created by Mr Sylvester daCunha and illustrator Mr Eustace Fernandes,” the company said in a statement. The Amul Girl was first created in 1966—a decade after Amul butter’s launch in 1956—when Sylvester daCunha and Eustace Fernandes developed the now-iconic “utterly butterly delicious” campaign with inputs from dairy visionary Dr Verghese Kurien. Advertising pioneer Sylvester daCunha, who gave birth to the mascot, passed away in June 2023.

Mediterranean diet may slash dementia risk by 35% in high-risk gene carriers: Study

Closely following a Mediterranean diet can significantly lower the risk of dementia — even in people most genetically vulnerable to Alzheimer’s, according to a 34-year study published Monday in Nature. Researchers at Mass General Brigham tracked over 5,700 people and found that those who ate a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, legumes, fish and olive oil — and low in alcohol and red/processed meat — had a sharply reduced risk of dementia. The effect was especially striking in people with two copies of the APOE4 gene, the strongest known genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s. For them, risk fell by at least 35%. Lead author Yuxi Liu said people with APOE4 may have distinct metabolic profiles that respond dramatically to healthy nutrients: “Improving metabolic function through diet might explain, or at least partially explain, the huge fall in dementia risk we saw.” Neurologist Dr. Richard Isaacson, who was not involved, called the results “stop the presses” findings: “Genes do not have to be your destiny… If dementia risk can be cut by 35% through diet, imagine the impact when combined with exercise, sleep, and stress management.” Wider evidence Lifestyle impact Evidence is mounting that combining diet with exercise, stress reduction and good sleep habits brings the greatest benefit. In one clinical trial, an APOE4 carrier showed reduced amyloid and tau proteins and even growth in hippocampal brain volume after a year of lifestyle changes. Research threat The study drew on decades of data and samples from the Nurse’s Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, both landmark projects. However, researchers warn their future is at risk after federal funding was cut during the Trump administration’s feud with Harvard. Without support, decades of bio-samples may be discarded. “It’s like burning the Library of Congress — you just can’t get that back,” said study nurse Martha Dodds.

Mahavatar Narsimha Becomes First Indian Animated Film to Cross ₹300 Crore Worldwide

Ashwin Kumar’s animated mythological drama Mahavatar Narsimha has scripted history by becoming the first Indian animated film to cross the ₹300-crore mark globally. Trade figures confirmed the milestone on Monday, making it the fifth Indian film in 2025 to achieve this feat, after big live-action releases Chhaava, Saiyaara, Coolie, and War 2. From Slow Start to Box Office Glory The film had a modest opening, earning just ₹1.75 crore nett on its first day. However, strong word-of-mouth gradually turned the tide in its favour. With these figures, the film’s total domestic earnings have reached an impressive ₹231.75 crore nett, driving its worldwide total past the ₹300-crore milestone. Strong Competition, Steady Run Even with the release of two big-ticket action films, War 2 and Coolie, on August 14, Mahavatar Narsimha managed to retain its audience. Reduced show counts impacted collections in its fourth week, but the film rebounded in its fifth weekend, demonstrating its staying power. Franchise Plans Produced by Hombale Films and Kleem Productions, Mahavatar Narsimha is envisioned as the first part of a long-running franchise based on the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu. Sequels have already been planned, with releases scheduled through 2037. This landmark success not only cements the film’s place in Indian cinema history but also sets a new benchmark for animated storytelling in the country.

Suniel Shetty’s Angry Outburst at Mimicry Artist Goes Viral

Actor Suniel Shetty has gone viral on social media after a video captured his fiery reaction to a mimicry artist attempting to imitate him at an event. The incident left the audience stunned, as the usually calm star openly scolded the performer for what he called a “cheap” imitation. Suniel Shetty Lashes Out In the video, Shetty can be seen visibly upset as he directly addresses the performer: “Tab se yeh bhaisahab alag alag dialogues bol rahe hain jo meri awaaz mein hain hi nahi. Itna ghatiya mimicry maine kabhi dekha hi nahi hai. Jab Suniel Shetty bolta hai toh ek mard ki tarah bolta hai… Yeh bachche ki tarah bol raha tha. Beta jab mimicry karte ho toh achi karni chahiye… Kharab nakal nahi karni chahiye.” (Translation: This person has been speaking dialogues in a voice that’s not mine at all. I’ve never seen such bad mimicry. When Suniel Shetty speaks, he speaks like a man… but this sounded childish. Son, when you mimic, do it well, don’t do poor imitations.) Artist’s Apology and Suniel’s Warning The young artist quickly apologised, saying he was not intentionally trying to mimic Shetty. But the actor doubled down, warning him: “Koshish karna bhi mat beta. Abhi bahut time hai Suniel Shetty banne mein. Peeche bal bandha ne kuch nahi hota… Abhi bacha hai, lagta hai Suniel Shetty ki action films dekhi nahi hai isne.” (Translation: Don’t even try, son. You have a long way to go before becoming Suniel Shetty. Just tying your hair doesn’t make you one… looks like you haven’t watched my action films.) Audience Reaction After the exchange, Shetty turned back to the crowd, thanking them for attending. However, his sharp words quickly became the talking point online. Some users called his reaction “too harsh,” while others felt he was simply defending his identity and legacy. Suniel Shetty’s Upcoming Projects On the work front, Shetty will next appear in Welcome To The Jungle, a comedy-drama directed by Ahmed Khan, alongside Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Paresh Rawal, Arshad Warsi, Lara Dutta, Raveena Tandon, and Disha Patani. The film is slated for release later this year. He will also reunite with Akshay Kumar in the much-awaited Hera Pheri 3, directed by Priyadarshan. The actor recently also paid tribute to India’s soldiers in an emotional gesture, saluting the nation’s bravehearts with pride.
