The Centre has approved negotiations for building six advanced submarines in India in collaboration with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) under Project 75-India (P-75I), a deal valued at ₹70,000 crore, The Times of India reported. The Defence Ministry and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) will begin formal talks with TKMS by the end of this month, with the contract expected to be finalised within six months. The submarines will be equipped with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems, enabling them to remain underwater for nearly three weeks, significantly boosting the Indian Navy’s undersea warfare capabilities. This decision follows a high-level meeting of defence and national security officials that reviewed India’s submarine programme and future requirements. The Navy aims to replace around 10 ageing submarines in the next decade, while parallel efforts continue on indigenous nuclear submarine projects. Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in partnership with the Submarine Building Centre, is already developing two nuclear attack submarines, further expanding India’s underwater fleet.

Dream11 Pulls Out as Team India’s Jersey Sponsor Ahead of Asia Cup, BCCI to Invite Fresh Bids

Just 16 days before the start of the Asia Cup in the UAE, fantasy sports platform Dream11 has reportedly withdrawn as the lead jersey sponsor of the Indian cricket team. The move comes after Parliament passed the ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill’, which bans online fantasy sports and gambling platforms. Rahul Gandhi Accuses BJP, EC of ‘Vote Theft’ During Bihar’s Voter Adhikar Yatra

In the second leg of the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ through poll-bound Bihar, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (August 23, 2025) escalated his attack on the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging large-scale irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress launched the 16-day yatra on August 17 to highlight what it calls attempts to “steal votes” in the state. Addressing a rally in Katihar district, part of the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal region, Gandhi accused the BJP of wanting to keep Dalits at the margins of society while handing “entire power and business” to industrialists Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani. ‘Battle of Ideologies’ Holding up a copy of the Constitution, Gandhi framed the campaign as a “battle of two ideologies” — one centered on equality and equal rights, the other on concentrating power in the hands of a few billionaires. He alleged that despite widespread public support, the media was ignoring the yatra, saying: “If you turn on the TV, you won’t see this slogan or yatra anywhere, because these media people don’t belong to the poor. They belong only to billionaires.” Gandhi also criticized the Modi government for unemployment in Bihar, linking it to demonetisation and GST, while accusing banks of waiving off big loans for industrialists but denying relief to farmers. Charge of Electoral Manipulation He reiterated claims that the BJP and the ECI are “stealing votes” through manipulations in Bihar’s voter lists, alleging: “They have deleted the names of lakhs of people in Bihar.” Visit to Makhana Farmers Earlier, Gandhi met makhana farmers in Katihar, highlighting their poor share of profits despite Bihar producing 90% of the world’s makhana. “In big cities, it sells for ₹1,000–2,000 per kilo, but farmers get only a nominal price. All the hard work is done by the 99% Bahujans, but the profit goes to just 1% of middlemen,” he wrote on X. Opposition Leaders Join In RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also targeted the Prime Minister, coining a new full form for the NDA as “Nahi Denge Adhikar” (Won’t Give Rights). He dismissed the FIR filed against him for remarks on Modi as intimidation, saying: “I will say it again and again that Narendra Modi is a factory of lies. I am not scared of the FIR.” Meanwhile, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi said the government was rattled by Rahul Gandhi’s campaign: “Ever since Rahul Gandhiji raised the issue of vote theft, unease has spread across the Election Commission and BJP governments throughout the country.”

India on Path to Become Third-Largest Economy, Says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (August 23, 2025) said that guided by the mantra of Reform, Perform, and Transform, India is in a position to help lift the world out of slow growth. Addressing a media event in New Delhi, he asserted that India will soon emerge as the world’s third-largest major economy and is steadily moving towards the goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. PM Modi stressed that reforms for his government are not driven by compulsion or crisis but are a matter of commitment and conviction. He announced that the next-generation GST reform, which aims to simplify tax laws and reduce prices, will be completed before Diwali. “With this arsenal of next-generation reforms, manufacturing in India will increase, demand will rise, industries will gain momentum, and new jobs will be created,” he said. Calling upon the private sector to raise investments in clean energy, quantum technology, battery storage, advanced materials, and biotechnology, Modi said such steps would strengthen India’s resolve to become a developed nation. Highlighting the strength of India’s economy, the Prime Minister said, “India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Very soon we are going to be the third-largest economy. Experts suggest India’s contribution to global growth will soon touch 20%.” He noted that this growth is supported by macroeconomic stability achieved in the past decade, with fiscal deficit expected to fall to 4.4%, controlled inflation, strong banks, record fundraising from capital markets, and robust foreign exchange reserves. Modi underlined that India is moving towards self-reliance with a focus on speed, scale, and scope. He said that unlike past governments that “missed the bus” in areas of technology and industry, India after 2014 has resolved to be in the driver’s seat of global opportunities. Citing technological progress, he said India developed its entire 5G stack domestically and is now working rapidly on Made-in-India 6G. He also pointed to rising exports, noting that India’s automobile exports increased from ₹50,000 crore in 2014 to ₹1.2 lakh crore today, while the country has also begun exporting metro coaches, rail coaches, and locomotives. Looking ahead, PM Modi announced that India will soon export electric vehicles to 100 countries, with a major event scheduled for August 26 to mark the milestone.
