YRF Offers ₹22 Crore Compensation to Naga Vamsi After War 2’s Box Office Failure

Yash Raj Films (YRF) is facing financial strain following the underperformance of War 2 at the box office. According to Great Andhra, the studio has offered ₹22 crore in compensation to Telugu producer-distributor Naga Vamsi, who bore heavy losses after acquiring the film’s distribution rights in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, War 2 was expected to be a pan-India blockbuster, riding on the star power of its leads. However, the film has managed just ₹200 crore net domestically in its first week against a massive ₹400 crore landing cost. The Telugu version, which was sold for ₹80 crore, has grossed only ₹52 crore net, and collections have now dropped below ₹1 crore per day. To mitigate losses, YRF has reportedly structured the compensation as: The Telugu distributor had initially expected returns of over ₹100 crore, but final numbers are likely to fall far short. While the Hindi version has fared somewhat better, crossing ₹150 crore net, the Telugu release has been termed a “disaster.” Overseas numbers too remain underwhelming, with War 2’s worldwide collection hovering around ₹300 crore. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film also stars Kiara Advani and forms part of the expanding YRF Spy Universe.

Ajay Devgn in Talks for Horror Comedy With Su From So Director JP Tuminadu

Ajay Devgn’s already-packed slate of films may soon expand further, as reports suggest the actor is in active talks with Kannada filmmaker JP Tuminadu, the director of the recent hit Su From So, for a new horror-comedy. According to Pinkvilla, the project will be backed by KVN Productions, which is making an aggressive push into Hindi cinema. Sources revealed that Devgn has responded positively to the concept and asked Tuminadu to return with a complete script. “Ajay has not been a part of a proper horror comedy, and this one falls right in the zone that he was on the lookout for,” said a source familiar with the discussions. If finalised, the film is expected to go on floors in the first half of 2026. KVN Productions is also bankrolling big-ticket ventures including Haiwaan (starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan) and Yash’s Toxic, slated for an Eid 2026 release. Meanwhile, Devgn is currently shooting Ranger with director Jagan Shakti, and gearing up for two of his flagship franchises — Drishyam 3 (expected to roll in October 2025) and Golmaal FIVE (January 2026).

CBI Arrests 8 J&K Policemen in Brutal Custodial Torture Case

New Delhi / Srinagar — In a case the Supreme Court described as “deeply shocking to the conscience of this court,” the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested eight Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, an Inspector, and an Assistant Sub-Inspector, for the custodial torture of Constable Khursheed Ahmad Chohan. The arrests follow the Supreme Court’s July 21 order directing the CBI to register an FIR, ensure accountability, and provide compensation to the victim. The Case: Brutality at Kupwara Interrogation Centre Chohan, a serving constable, was summoned from Baramulla to the Joint Interrogation Centre, Kupwara, in February 2023 in connection with a narcotics probe. The FIR names DSP Aijaz Ahmad Naiko, SI Riyaz Ahmad, and six other officers. A Special Police Officer involved has been disengaged. Supreme Court’s Observations The bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta called it an egregious violation of Article 21 (Right to Life and Liberty): Wider Impact This is one of the rare instances where senior J&K police officers face custodial torture charges, underlining judicial concern over abuse within interrogation centres. Human rights advocates say the ruling could become a watershed case, compelling stricter scrutiny of custodial practices in conflict zones.

Chennai to Install 16 Smart Water ATMs in Corporation Schools, Pilot to Begin in Select Zones

Chennai — The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will install 16 smart water ATMs, one each in 16 corporation-run schools, a plan announced by Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran in the July council meeting. The first-phase rollout covers five schools in the Kodambakkam zone, four in Adyar, three in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, two in Royapuram and one each in Sholinganallur and Anna Nagar. Schools with more than 1,000 students were prioritised for the pilot. A senior GCC official said the Buildings department will finalise the type of machines and the storage-tank capacities; the model will mirror the smart system already used in a corporation dining hall. Commissioner Kumaragurubaran had pointed out that traditional RO plants become expensive to maintain once they fail, and the new ATMs are expected to both improve water quality and help monitor students’ water intake. The works are still at a preliminary stage while officials assess feasibility and machine sizing for each site. The move comes alongside the School Education Department’s reintroduction of the “Water Bell” — a scheduled water break signalled by a separate bell so students hydrate without leaving classrooms. Headmistress of the Girls Higher Secondary School, Anna Nagar, welcomed the plan, noting that a single RO plant servicing 1,400 students is already strained and that a water ATM would be beneficial. Beneficiary schools named for the first phase include higher secondary and primary schools across Tiruvanmiyur, Kolathur, Velachery, Taramani, Semmenchery, Maduvankarai (Guindy), TH Road (New Washermenpet), MGR Nagar (KK Nagar), Marker Road (Perambur), Girls HSS on MH Road (Perambur), West Saidapet, Pulla Avenue (Shenoy Nagar), Buddha Street (Korukkupet), Boys HSS on Kodambakkam Salai (Saidapet), Chennai Primary School on Jones Road (Saidapet) and Chennai Middle School at MGR Nagar (T Nagar). Officials said installation and final preparations will continue as site assessments are completed.

Jaishankar Slams US Tariff Move on Russian Oil, Calls It “Perplexing”

Moscow — Taking sharp aim at the Trump administration, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday expressed strong displeasure over Washington’s decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on India’s energy imports from Russia. Speaking alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Jaishankar said he was “very perplexed” since it was the US itself that had urged India to stabilise global energy markets by purchasing Russian oil. “We are not the biggest purchasers of Russian oil—that is China. We are not the biggest buyers of Russian LNG—that is likely the European Union. Nor are we the country with the largest trade surge with Russia after 2022. Yet, despite being encouraged by the Americans to buy oil from Russia for stability, we are now penalised. So quite honestly, we are very perplexed at the logic,” Jaishankar said. The minister’s comments come after repeated criticism from senior US officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro, and President Donald Trump, who accused India of “fuelling Russia’s war machine.” The new tariff, New Delhi argues, unfairly targets India while larger consumers of Russian energy remain unaffected. Jaishankar, on a three-day visit to Moscow, later met President Vladimir Putin and held wide-ranging talks with Lavrov. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining energy cooperation through trade and investments. Lavrov noted progress in hydrocarbons and stressed joint projects in Russia’s Far East and Arctic shelf. On Wednesday, Jaishankar had met Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov to discuss trade and economic ties. He called for unlocking the “full potential” of bilateral trade by addressing non-tariff barriers and regulatory hurdles. Expanding Indian exports in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textiles, he said, would help correct the current imbalance. Fertiliser supplies, skilled Indian labour in IT and construction, and long-term energy projects were also high on the agenda. Reviewing the broader relationship, Jaishankar described India-Russia ties as among the “steadiest of major relationships since the Second World War.” He cited geopolitical convergence, leadership-level contacts, and popular sentiment as key drivers, noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two visits to Russia last year and recent phone calls with President Putin. Connectivity projects such as the International North-South Transport Corridor, the Chennai–Vladivostok maritime route, and cooperation in the Northern Sea Route were also discussed as ways to expand Eurasian trade access. Highlighting defence as another cornerstone, Jaishankar underscored Russia’s support for India’s Make in India goals through joint production and technology transfer. With 60–70 per cent of India’s defence inventory linked to Russia, systems such as the S-400 continue to play a critical role in India’s security preparedness, including during the hostilities following Operation Sindoor in May.

Early-Morning Security Breach at Parliament, Man Scales Wall and Enters Premises

New Delhi. In a fresh security breach, a 20-year-old man managed to enter the Parliament premises early Friday morning by scaling the wall with the help of an adjacent tree and jumping inside, police said. The incident occurred around 5:50 am from the Rail Bhawan side. Parliament security staff quickly apprehended the intruder and handed him over to local authorities. “He will now be questioned by Intelligence Bureau and Special Cell officials,” a police officer said. The accused, originally from Uttar Pradesh and currently working at a shop in Gujarat, was wearing a black T-shirt and khaki pants at the time of the incident. Police said he was of a thin build and was not carrying anything suspicious. “He appears to be mentally unstable,” the officer added. This incident has raised fresh concerns about Parliament security, especially in the backdrop of the December 2023 breach when two men jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery during Zero Hour, raised slogans and released yellow smoke canisters. Though no MP was injured, the incident had triggered a massive security review. Following that breach, four people were arrested — Sagar Sharma (25) from Lucknow, Manoranjan D (35) from Mysuru, Neelam Singh (42) from Hisar, and Amol Shinde (25) from Latur. The Lok Sabha Secretariat later ordered the withdrawal of 150 Delhi Police personnel, including 54 women, from Parliament security. They were replaced by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, who were also tasked with conducting a comprehensive security survey of the Parliament complex. The latest intrusion, despite heightened security measures, is expected to lead to another round of scrutiny and possible tightening of access and surveillance systems around the Parliament House.

Supreme Court Modifies Stray Dog Order, Expands Scope to Pan-India

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Friday modified its earlier order on the handling of stray dogs, clarifying that captured canines will be released after sterilisation and immunisation, except those suffering from rabies or displaying aggressive behaviour. This marks a significant change from the August 11 directive of a two-judge bench, which had barred the release of strays and warned of contempt proceedings for any laxity. A three-judge bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria also expanded the scope of the case beyond Delhi-NCR, directing that it be treated as a pan-India matter. Notices have been issued to all states and Union territories, as well as relevant departments, to work towards a uniform national policy for stray dog management. The bench also decided to transfer similar cases pending in high courts to itself. The court reiterated that civic bodies in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad must carry out mass capture of stray dogs and set up shelters or pounds for their relocation. Progress reports on the creation of such infrastructure must be submitted before the court. However, in a key modification, the bench ruled that only rabid or aggressive dogs should be excluded from release after sterilisation and immunisation. Another significant directive requires municipal bodies to designate specific feeding zones for stray dogs within each ward. Feeding strays in public places has been strictly prohibited, with violations liable to legal action. Municipal authorities have also been asked to set up helplines to report such violations. The bench further emphasised that no individual or organisation should obstruct municipal officials in capturing stray dogs. In cases of obstruction, public servants may initiate proceedings, and NGOs or individuals found guilty of interference could face a penalty of ₹25,000. At the same time, the court clarified that animal lovers wishing to adopt strays can apply to municipal corporations. The earlier August 11 order, passed by Justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan, had mandated the immediate rounding up of all stray dogs across Delhi-NCR and their confinement in large shelters, barring any release back onto the streets. This sweeping direction faced sharp criticism from animal welfare groups, who called it cruel and inconsistent with the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules. Responding to widespread criticism and fresh petitions, Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai reassigned the case to the three-judge bench. During the August 14 hearing, the larger bench expressed strong displeasure at the Delhi government and civic bodies for failing to enforce their own regulatory framework, noting that both human safety and animal welfare were being neglected. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Delhi government, highlighted alarming cases of child mutilation and fatal dog bites, stressing the need for urgent intervention. He urged that while dogs should not be killed, they must be separated, sterilised and treated humanely to address the growing public health risk. On the other side, senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Sidharth Luthra and others representing animal welfare groups argued that the August 11 order was unlawful and impractical. They contended that the ABC Rules mandate sterilisation and vaccination, followed by returning the dogs to their localities, not permanent confinement in shelters. They also cautioned that mass removals without adequate infrastructure would inevitably lead to cruelty. The matter will continue to be heard as the court seeks to evolve a uniform national policy on stray dog management.

Uday Kotak Urges Stronger Government Backing for SMEs Amid US Tariff Shock

Indian banking billionaire Uday Kotak has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to provide stronger budgetary support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), warning that steep US tariffs could deliver a “major shock” to the economy. Kotak, founder of Kotak Mahindra Bank, told that additional levies imposed by US President Donald Trump had “woken Indians up” to the country’s economic vulnerabilities. “We must think about this as an opportunity for us to get out of our cruise mindset and from a comfort mindset to ‘we are at risk’,” Kotak said. Tariff Pressure from Washington Call for Direct Fiscal Support Kotak said the government should extend “direct fiscal support” to turbocharge SMEs in manufacturing, research, and technology. Echoed by Other Industry Leaders Kotak’s appeal follows similar calls by top Indian business figures: Modi’s Push for Self-Reliance The Modi government has rolled out tax reforms, GST cuts, and red-tape reduction as part of its Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) drive. But the tariffs threaten its target of raising manufacturing’s share of GDP from the current 14% to 25%. Strong Fundamentals, Rising Risks Kotak emphasised India’s resilience: But he cautioned that with India’s per capita GDP at $2,700 — far behind China ($13,300) and the US ($89,000) — the country risks falling into the middle-income trap if it fails to accelerate growth. “The uncertainty of Trump’s tariff regime has created a sense of urgency for transforming India,” Kotak said. “It is a great opportunity to pivot.”
