Modi, Jaishankar Signal Positive Turn in India-US Relations Amid Trump’s Mixed Messages

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wasted no time in appreciating and reciprocating US President Donald Trump’s recent “positive assessment” of bilateral ties, suggesting this could be the moment both sides seize to reverse the tide of negativity that has clouded relations in recent years. Ties between the two countries, which had reached historic highs over the past two decades, had sharply deteriorated under Trump’s leadership. Shortly after Modi’s response, external affairs minister S. Jaishankar reinforced the message, noting that the Prime Minister attaches “enormous importance” to the partnership with the US and has always shared a “very good personal equation” with Trump. “But the point is that we remain engaged with the US, and at this time, I can’t say more than that. But that’s really what I would say,” Jaishankar added. The minister will travel to New York later this month to attend the 80th UN General Assembly (UNGA). He is also scheduled to join the BRICS online summit, where member nations are expected to take a united stand against Trump’s tariff policies. The latest development has opened the door for a possible phone call between Modi and Trump, though diplomatic sources have not confirmed any such plan. While a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the UNGA could have helped reaffirm Trump’s commitment to the partnership, the Assembly’s latest list of speakers indicates Jaishankar—not Modi—will lead the Indian delegation. India had initially reserved September 26 for the Prime Minister to address the UNGA but has since revised the plan to a minister-level statement. However, the PM could still change his mind as the list remains provisional. India, for its part, hopes Trump will stand by his latest conciliatory remarks, unlike his inconsistent stance on the India-Pakistan ceasefire, where he first claimed to have brokered peace and then retracted his statement. Despite speculation of a foreign policy shift following the recent SCO summit, the Ministry of External Affairs has reiterated that India continues to value its strategic partnership with the US, which it wants to strengthen on the basis of shared interests and mutual respect. Still, New Delhi remains cautious. Trump’s administration has frequently criticized India on trade and other issues, making the country a convenient target for his MAGA support base. Additionally, concerns remain about Trump’s overtures to China, his immigration overhaul that threatens Indian IT workers, his approach to Russia, and his unpredictable statements about Pakistan. In what appears to be an overnight shift, both Trump and Modi have now attempted to calm the firestorm that has unsettled India-US relations, with Trump moving quickly from declaring India had been “lost to China” to assuring there was “nothing to worry about” in bilateral ties.

Blood Moon 2025: One of the Longest Total Lunar Eclipses of the Decade

On the night of September 7–8, 2025, skywatchers across Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia will witness a breathtaking total lunar eclipse, popularly known as a Blood Moon. This eclipse is set apart by its exceptional duration, with the total phase lasting about 82 minutes, making it one of the longest total lunar eclipses in the past 10 years. The extended length of this celestial spectacle is due to two rare factors: the Moon’s slower movement near apogee (its farthest point from Earth) and its central passage through Earth’s umbra, the darkest part of the shadow. This perfect alignment offers observers a prolonged and unforgettable view of the Moon glowing in shades of deep red and copper. Why the Moon Turns Red: The Science Behind the Blood Moon A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. During a total eclipse, the Moon passes fully into the umbra and darkens dramatically. Instead of vanishing, it takes on a reddish hue because of Rayleigh scattering. As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, shorter wavelengths (blue and green) scatter away, while longer red wavelengths bend around the Earth to light up the Moon. This same effect makes sunsets and sunrises appear red. Eclipse Timings for India (IST) – September 7–8, 2025 With the Moon high in the sky, Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru will provide ideal viewing conditions. Global Visibility For regions missing out, astronomy observatories will stream the event live worldwide. Why the September 2025 Eclipse is Special How to Watch the Blood Moon A Celestial Treat for Billions The September 7–8, 2025 Blood Moon will not only be a dazzling astronomical event but also a rare opportunity for billions to connect with the cosmos. With its unusual duration, striking colors, and wide visibility, this eclipse promises to be one of the most memorable skywatching events of the decade.

WHO lifts global emergency status on mpox, Africa CDC still flags regional threat

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that the spread of mpox (monkeypox) in Africa no longer represents a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), citing sustained declines in cases and deaths. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday that the agency’s Emergency Committee, which has been reviewing the outbreak every three months, advised lifting the designation. “This decision is based on sustained declines in cases and deaths in Congo, and in other affected countries, including Burundi, Sierra Leone, and Uganda. We also have a better understanding of the drivers of transmission and most affected countries have developed a sustained response capacity,” Tedros noted. However, Tedros cautioned that the move does not mean the threat is over. “Lifting the emergency declaration does not mean our response will stop,” he said, stressing the risk of continued flare-ups. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has separately declared that mpox remains a continental emergency, pointing to fresh surges in Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, Zambia, and Tanzania despite an overall 52% decline in weekly confirmed cases. Mpox is a viral zoonotic disease with early symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, and later widespread rashes. While most patients recover within weeks, severe illness and deaths can occur, especially among young children and people living with HIV. Since May 2022, more than 100 countries have reported mpox cases. WHO first declared the outbreak a PHEIC in August 2022, the agency’s highest level of health alert.

Canada admits Khalistani groups receive terror funding from its soil

Ottawa – For the first time, Canada has officially admitted that Khalistani terrorist groups are operating from its soil and receiving financial support. A new report by Canada’s Finance Department on money laundering and terrorist financing risks flagged groups such as Babbar Khalsa International, International Sikh Youth Federation, and Sikhs for Justice as beneficiaries of funds raised in Canada. The assessment said these groups, listed under Canada’s Criminal Code as terrorist entities, fall under the Politically Motivated Violent Extremism (PMVE) category. It also highlighted financial links between Canadian networks and groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies observed that extremist groups are capitalising on a mix of charitable donations, drug trafficking, auto thefts, and crowdfunding, including cryptocurrency transactions, to sustain operations. The misuse of the non-profit sector by Khalistani extremists and funding from the diaspora community were specifically flagged. The report noted that while the once-extensive fundraising networks in Canada have shrunk, “smaller pockets of individuals with allegiance to the cause” remain active. The findings put renewed pressure on Ottawa, which has long been accused of turning a blind eye to Khalistani extremism. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced criticism for inaction, and attention now shifts to his successor, Mark Carney, on whether he will take corrective measures against terror financing networks.

Foundation Laid for ₹5,500 Crore Gurugram Metro Line Connecting 27 Stations

Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday laid the foundation stone for a new metro line in Gurugram that will connect 27 stations across the city. The 28.5-km-long corridor will run from Millennium City Centre via Cyber City up to Dwarka Expressway at an estimated cost of ₹5,500 crore. Key stations will include Subhash Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Udyog Vihar, and Palam Vihar. The project is expected to be completed within four years. Khattar, speaking at the event organised by Gurugram Metro Rail Limited at Gurugram University Campus Auditorium, said the metro line would give Gurugram a distinct identity. He also announced plans for metro extensions, including Rejangla Chowk–Dwarka Sector-21, Sector-56–Pachgaon, and the Namo Metro Corridor linking Delhi-Karnal, Delhi-Neemrana, and Gurugram-Noida via Faridabad. The Union government will also provide 10,000 buses at concessional rates nationwide, out of which 450 will go to Haryana, including 100 for Gurugram. Khattar highlighted India’s rapid metro expansion, noting that the network has grown from 248 km across 5 cities in 2014 to 1,066 km in 24 cities today, with another 970 km under construction. “Once completed, India will emerge as the world’s number one country in metro service,” he said. To address last-mile connectivity, Khattar said an app-based system would link transport facilities to metro stations, ensuring safety and allowing fare payments through metro cards, thereby reducing parking hassles. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who presided over the ceremony, said the metro service will reduce traffic congestion, cut travel time, lower pollution, and create jobs. He noted Gurugram’s transformation into one of India’s top economic hubs, hosting over 250 Fortune 500 companies and most of Haryana’s 19 unicorns. “Once a small village, Gurugram today is known worldwide as the Millennium City and ranks third in per capita income in India, after Chandigarh and Mumbai,” he said. Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh termed the project a historic milestone for Gurugram’s development, emphasising its role in easing traffic, curbing pollution, and boosting industrial and business activities. Gurugram MLA Mukesh Sharma added that the new line will connect old and new Gurugram, making daily travel more convenient and giving the city a modern transport backbone.

Inspector Zende review: Manoj Bajpayee grounds a witty, retro cat-and-mouse thriller

International conman Carl Bhojraj (Jim Sarbh) breaks free from prison and resurfaces in Mumbai, reigniting a tense cat-and-mouse chase. On his trail is Inspector Madhukar Zende (Manoj Bajpayee), whose grit and instincts make him the only man capable of cornering the elusive fugitive before his web of deceptions spirals into chaos. Crime thrillers inspired by real-life criminals are hardly new to Indian cinema. Charles Sobhraj—the infamous “Bikini Killer”—has long fascinated filmmakers, from Main Aur Charles (2015) to Netflix’s The Serpent (2021). Inspector Zende, however, flips the perspective, shining the spotlight on the unsung hero who caught him: Mumbai’s IPS officer Madhukar Bapurao Zende. A chase through 1970s–80s Mumbai Set against the gritty yet vibrant backdrop of the 1970s and ’80s, the film dramatizes Zende’s pursuit of Bhojraj, a fictionalized Sobhraj. Twice, Zende managed to apprehend the fugitive—first in 1971 and again after the sensational 1986 Tihar Jail escape. Rather than dwelling on darkness, the narrative celebrates street-smart policing in a pre-digital era—before CCTV cameras and forensic databases, when instinct and persistence were a cop’s strongest weapons. Writer-director Chinmay D. Mandlekar wisely avoids the trappings of a brooding biopic. Instead, he crafts a 112-minute period adventure laced with humour and warmth. His recreation of Mumbai’s streets, fashion, and restless energy feels authentic, giving the film a nostalgic appeal while keeping it briskly paced. Performances power the film The beating heart of Inspector Zende is its performances. Manoj Bajpayee plays Zende with earthy simplicity and quiet authority, steering clear of loud heroics. He gives the cop a humane core—pragmatic, witty, and unpretentious. While echoes of The Family Man occasionally surface, Zende is firmly his own man. Opposite him, Jim Sarbh has a ball as Bhojraj. Smooth, magnetic, and unnervingly charming, his flamboyance makes the fugitive as compelling as the cop tailing him. Supporting turns from Sachin Khedekar (as DGP Purandare) and Girija Oak (as Zende’s wife Viju) flesh out the world, with Oak and Bajpayee’s warm chemistry balancing the chase with domestic tenderness. A family-friendly thriller? Where Inspector Zende distinguishes itself is in tone. Instead of brooding intensity, it embraces levity, almost positioning itself as a family-friendly crime thriller. This choice will split audiences—purists may find the humour softens the edge of real crimes, while others will welcome its lighter, more accessible approach. Verdict Neither a rigid biopic nor a fictional caper, Inspector Zende walks a middle path: part homage to a forgotten police hero, part entertaining retro thriller. It may not please all crime purists, but it earns its place with strong performances, a lively tone, and a lovingly detailed recreation of a bygone Mumbai. ⭐ Rating: 3.5/5
