Russia to Grant Visa-Free Entry to Chinese Citizens After Beijing’s Reciprocal Move

Russia will soon introduce visa-free entry for Chinese citizens, President Vladimir Putin announced on Friday at an economic forum in Vladivostok. The move comes after China declared visa-free access for Russian passport holders starting September 15, allowing stays of up to 30 days on a one-year trial basis. Putin hailed the decision as a “friendly gesture” by Beijing and pledged reciprocity. Addressing Chinese President Xi Jinping as his “dear friend,” the Russian leader said ties between Moscow and Beijing were at “an unprecedentedly high level.” The announcement was made during Putin’s meeting with Li Hongzhong, a senior member of China’s Communist Party and vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee. Putin also recalled the historical solidarity of the two nations during World War II, saying, “We stood together then, and we remain together now.” Beyond travel, both sides advanced economic cooperation. A new memorandum was signed to build a natural gas pipeline to China, while Russia’s state gas company finalized agreements with a Chinese counterpart to boost energy deliveries via existing routes. The move comes against the backdrop of strained US-China ties. Just a day earlier, Washington unveiled a new visa policy aimed at Central American nationals accused of working on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party to undermine regional governance. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said such individuals, along with their families, would be barred from entering the United States.

ISRO Invites Proposals for Scientific Use of Chandrayaan-3 Data

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has issued an Announcement of Opportunity (AO) inviting India’s scientific community to analyse and utilise data from the Chandrayaan-3 lander and rover experiments. The Chandrayaan-3 mission, which made history on August 23, 2023, with a successful soft-landing near the Moon’s south pole, has generated valuable datasets that ISRO now seeks to open for wider scientific research. The AO is open to faculty and researchers from recognised Indian universities, colleges, research institutions, and government organisations outside ISRO and the Department of Space. Proposals may be submitted individually or in groups. ISRO clarified that only researchers with at least four years of service left before retirement can lead projects as Principal Investigators (PI). Proposals must be endorsed by institutional heads. Each project will run for three years, with a possible one-year extension based on scientific outcomes and committee recommendations. Annual reviews will be conducted by ISRO to monitor progress. The last date for submission of proposals is October 21, 2025.

Char Dham, Hemkund Sahib Yatra Postponed Till September 5 Amid Heavy Rain Alert in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Chief Minister’s Secretary and Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey on Monday announced the postponement of the Char Dham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib Yatra until September 5, in view of the red and orange alerts issued by the Meteorological Department. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said several districts are under red and orange alerts, and the next 24–48 hours will be crucial. “Our entire district administration, NDRF, SDRF, and all departments are on alert. We are also monitoring the Nanak Sagar Dam, which is currently 5 feet below the danger level,” Dhami said. The CM added that relief efforts are underway for families whose homes were damaged, with relocation to safer places and relief camps being set up. Road clearance work is also in progress. Dhami chaired a review meeting with senior officials and directed district-level officers to remain on round-the-clock alert. He emphasized strict vigilance on landslide-prone routes, waterlogging preparedness in plains, and ensuring all safety measures for the public. “The State continues to face challenges due to excessive rainfall, and the coming few days are going to be more difficult,” he cautioned.

Vivek Agnihotri Appeals to Mamata Banerjee Not to Ban The Bengal Files

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has appealed to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee not to impose a ban on his upcoming film The Bengal Files. Stressing that the film should be judged on its artistic value rather than political implications, Agnihotri highlighted the importance of freedom of expression as a cornerstone of democracy. In a video message shared on social media, he directly addressed the West Bengal CM, urging her to see the film as part of a larger national conversation rather than through a regional lens. He insisted that audiences must have the freedom to form their own opinions about the film’s content. Alongside the video, Agnihotri wrote: “URGENT: An open appeal to Hon’ble CM @MamataOfficial. Please listen till the end and share widely as your protest against the banning of a film on Hindu Genocide. #TheBengalFiles In cinemas 05 September 2025 (sic).” His plea comes amid rising demands to ban the film in West Bengal, which also resulted in the cancellation of its trailer launch and press events in Kolkata. The Bengal Files depicts the events of the Great Calcutta Killings of 1946, including Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots. The film features a prominent ensemble cast including Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, Simrat Kaur, Namoshi Chakraborty, and Pallavi Joshi. Speaking to IndiaToday.in, Agnihotri said, “It’s very important that I make this film, make the younger generation aware, enlighten them. And also, the entire community gets to express a generational trauma.” Reflecting on his earlier work, The Kashmir Files, Agnihotri compared his role as a filmmaker to that of a psychiatrist for Indian society. “Acknowledgement of the trauma is the first step towards healing. With The Kashmir Files, Kashmiri Pandits told me my film started their healing. So yes, you can say I’m a filmmaker-psychiatrist,” he remarked with a laugh. The Bengal Files is scheduled for release on September 5, 2025.

Nestlé Sacks CEO Laurent Freixe, Appoints Philipp Navratil as Successor

Nestlé has dismissed Chief Executive Laurent Freixe after an internal probe found he had an undisclosed romantic relationship with a direct subordinate, violating the company’s code of business conduct. The investigation, ordered by Nestlé’s board and overseen by Chairman Paul Bulcke and lead independent director Pablo Isla with external counsel support, concluded that Freixe breached governance standards. “This was a necessary decision,” Bulcke said. “Nestlé’s values and governance are strong foundations of our company.” Philipp Navratil, a company veteran who joined Nestlé in 2001, has been appointed CEO. Navratil began his career as an internal auditor and has held multiple leadership positions across Central America and the global coffee business. In 2020, he moved to Nestlé’s Coffee Strategic Business Unit, and in 2024, he became CEO of Nespresso. Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, has faced pressure from rising commodity costs and tariffs. The company said in July that price increases helped offset higher expenses for coffee and cocoa.

Rupee Hits Record Low at 88.33 Against Dollar as U.S. Tariffs Bite; Job Creation Declines for Second Year

The Indian rupee slumped to a fresh record low , falling to ₹88.33 per U.S. dollar, breaching its previous lifetime low of ₹88.3075. The persistent depreciation reflects market unease over the impact of higher U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, which now stand at 50% following Washington’s latest increase. “Unless we see some improvement in trade relations between India and the U.S., we cannot expect any stability in the rupee. Everything now depends upon the RBI, on how they plan to manage the markets,” said V.R.C. Reddy, treasury head at Karur Vysya Bank, in remarks to Reuters. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), while maintaining it does not target specific exchange rates, has a track record of stepping in to curb excessive volatility. Market participants are closely watching whether it will intervene to calm the current slide. Economists warn that the tariffs are a significant blow to India’s export competitiveness, particularly in textiles, engineering goods, and other labor-intensive sectors. A slowdown in exports risks widening the trade deficit and weighing on corporate earnings. Adding to concerns, foreign investors have pulled out $2.4 billion from Indian equities in the past three sessions, according to Reuters data. Job Creation Slows The stress on the economy is further underscored by weakening job creation. Net formal job additions under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) have fallen for two straight years since peaking in FY23. The number of establishments making their first Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) filings also slipped to 52,309 in FY25, down 6.6% from a year earlier. While India continues to project strong GDP growth, the combination of a weakening rupee, higher trade tariffs, export slowdown, and declining formal job creation paints a challenging picture for policymakers.

PM Modi Hails India’s 7.8% GDP Growth, Takes Veiled Swipe at Trump’s Tariff Moves

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday indirectly countered U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of India’s economy, hailing the country’s strong growth despite what he called “challenges from economic selfishness.” Speaking at the Semicon India 2025 event in New Delhi, Modi highlighted that India registered 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter of FY 2025-26, the fastest in five quarters. “Once again, India has performed better than every expectation, every assessment. At a time when there are concerns about the world economy, there are challenges created by economic selfishness; in that environment, India has achieved a growth of 7.8%,” Modi said, noting that growth was visible “across every sector.” Government data shows India—currently the world’s fourth-largest economy—is on track to become the third-largest by 2030 with a projected GDP of USD 7.3 trillion. By contrast, the U.S. economy expanded at 3.3% in the same quarter. The Prime Minister’s remarks come a day after his return from a high-profile visit to China, where he, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping showcased camaraderie in what analysts viewed as a counterweight to Washington. Modi’s comments also appeared to be a rebuttal to Trump’s recent “dead economy” jibe at India. The U.S. president has slapped 50% tariffs on Indian goods—25% reciprocal duties plus another 25% penalty over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. Besides India, only Brazil faces similar tariff levels, the highest in the world.
