Rupee Hits Record Low at 88.33 Against Dollar as U.S. Tariffs Bite; Job Creation Declines for Second Year

The Indian rupee slumped to a fresh record low , falling to ₹88.33 per U.S. dollar, breaching its previous lifetime low of ₹88.3075. The persistent depreciation reflects market unease over the impact of higher U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, which now stand at 50% following Washington’s latest increase. “Unless we see some improvement in trade relations between India and the U.S., we cannot expect any stability in the rupee. Everything now depends upon the RBI, on how they plan to manage the markets,” said V.R.C. Reddy, treasury head at Karur Vysya Bank, in remarks to Reuters. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), while maintaining it does not target specific exchange rates, has a track record of stepping in to curb excessive volatility. Market participants are closely watching whether it will intervene to calm the current slide. Economists warn that the tariffs are a significant blow to India’s export competitiveness, particularly in textiles, engineering goods, and other labor-intensive sectors. A slowdown in exports risks widening the trade deficit and weighing on corporate earnings. Adding to concerns, foreign investors have pulled out $2.4 billion from Indian equities in the past three sessions, according to Reuters data. Job Creation Slows The stress on the economy is further underscored by weakening job creation. Net formal job additions under the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) have fallen for two straight years since peaking in FY23. The number of establishments making their first Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) filings also slipped to 52,309 in FY25, down 6.6% from a year earlier. While India continues to project strong GDP growth, the combination of a weakening rupee, higher trade tariffs, export slowdown, and declining formal job creation paints a challenging picture for policymakers.

PM Modi Hails India’s 7.8% GDP Growth, Takes Veiled Swipe at Trump’s Tariff Moves

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday indirectly countered U.S. President Donald Trump’s criticism of India’s economy, hailing the country’s strong growth despite what he called “challenges from economic selfishness.” Speaking at the Semicon India 2025 event in New Delhi, Modi highlighted that India registered 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter of FY 2025-26, the fastest in five quarters. “Once again, India has performed better than every expectation, every assessment. At a time when there are concerns about the world economy, there are challenges created by economic selfishness; in that environment, India has achieved a growth of 7.8%,” Modi said, noting that growth was visible “across every sector.” Government data shows India—currently the world’s fourth-largest economy—is on track to become the third-largest by 2030 with a projected GDP of USD 7.3 trillion. By contrast, the U.S. economy expanded at 3.3% in the same quarter. The Prime Minister’s remarks come a day after his return from a high-profile visit to China, where he, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping showcased camaraderie in what analysts viewed as a counterweight to Washington. Modi’s comments also appeared to be a rebuttal to Trump’s recent “dead economy” jibe at India. The U.S. president has slapped 50% tariffs on Indian goods—25% reciprocal duties plus another 25% penalty over New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil. Besides India, only Brazil faces similar tariff levels, the highest in the world.

Allahabad HC Raises Concern Over Safety of Women in Gyms, Seeks Details on Registration

Allahabad High Court has expressed serious concern over the safety and dignity of women clients being trained by male trainers in gyms without adequate safeguards. The observation came from Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav while hearing an appeal filed by Nitin Saini, a gym trainer from Meerut, accused of using caste-based slurs against a woman client. The matter will now be heard on September 8. The victim, in her statement before the trial court, alleged that Saini had also prepared obscene videos of another woman client and sent them to her. In its order dated August 27, the high court directed the Investigating Officer of Police Station Brahmpuri, Meerut to submit a personal affidavit specifying: Calling it a matter of “serious concern,” the court underlined the need for safeguards to protect women clients during gym training sessions.

Supreme Court Dismisses Challenge to Rollout of 20% Ethanol (E20) Fuel

India’s top court on Monday rejected a public interest petition that sought to block the government’s move to roll out 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20) nationwide. The challenge, filed last month, had asked for motorists to retain the option to buy unblended fuel after E20 became the sole fuel available at nearly 90,000 petrol pumps across the country. Attorney General R. Venkataramani told the Supreme Court the decision to introduce E20 was carefully considered and would also help farmers — ethanol in India is largely produced from sugarcane. The government argued the rollout was not a “mindless application of switching out one system with another” and that related concerns were being addressed. Some automakers had earlier warned that E20 had not been fully tested for compatibility with older vehicles, prompting consumer worries. However, many in the auto sector later downplayed safety risks. P.K. Banerjee, executive director of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), said over the weekend that while E20 may reduce mileage in older cars, it is not a safety risk. With the Supreme Court dismissal, the government’s E20 policy remains in force as India pursues its clean-energy goals and seeks to boost domestic ethanol demand.

Dwayne Johnson Breaks Down in Tears as The Smashing Machine Earns 15-Minute Standing Ovation at Venice

Dwayne Johnson, popularly known as The Rock, was moved to tears at the Venice Film Festival after his film The Smashing Machine received a thunderous 15-minute standing ovation. The biographical drama, in which Johnson portrays legendary ’90s fighter Mark Kerr, left both the actor and the audience deeply emotional following its screening. Johnson, visibly overwhelmed, was joined on stage by his co-star Emily Blunt and director Benny Safdie. The real Mark Kerr, who was also present, shared in the touching moment as the audience applauded the raw and heartfelt storytelling. Fans further electrified the evening by greeting Johnson with his iconic wrestling catchphrase: “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?!” Critics have praised Johnson for stepping away from his usual blockbuster persona to deliver a transformative performance. Nearly unrecognisable under prosthetics, he immersed himself in Kerr’s turbulent journey. “This is the kind of storytelling that’s raw and real,” Johnson told Variety, reflecting on the experience. Emily Blunt also shone in her role as Dawn Staples, Kerr’s girlfriend, adding emotional depth to the narrative. The A24 release, scheduled to hit theatres in November, is already generating strong Oscar buzz, with many suggesting it could redefine Johnson’s career. The powerful reception drew comparisons to Brendan Fraser’s emotional comeback with The Whale at Venice in 2021, hinting at a similar awards-season trajectory for Johnson. With Kerr himself witnessing the audience’s outpouring of appreciation, the film’s debut was not only cinematic but profoundly personal. As the Venice Film Festival continues, The Smashing Machine has firmly positioned itself as one of the most talked-about films, marking a pivotal moment in Dwayne Johnson’s evolution as an actor and a serious awards contender.

Trump Says India Offered Zero Tariffs on US Exports Amid Strain Over Trade War

Former US President Donald Trump on Monday claimed that India has offered to cut tariffs on American exports to “nothing,” even as tensions mount between the two countries over steep trade duties. “It has been totally a one-sided disaster,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, alleging that high tariff barriers in India made it difficult for US companies to sell their products, while India exported “massive amounts of goods” to the American market. “They (India) have now offered to cut their tariffs (on exports from the US) to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago,” he posted. Trump’s comments came just as Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi after a round of high-level meetings — including separate engagements with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin — and participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, a 10-nation bloc led by Moscow and Beijing. The timing has fueled speculation that New Delhi is seeking to rebalance ties amid Washington’s tariff escalations. Since late July, Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on all Indian exports to the US, citing India’s defence and energy purchases from Russia. Despite Trump’s sharp rhetoric, the US embassy in New Delhi struck a positive note, posting on X that the bilateral partnership “will continue to scale new heights” and describing it as a “defining relationship of the 21st century.” US Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that the “enduring friendship between our two peoples is the bedrock of our cooperation.” Trump’s tariffs have drawn criticism at home as well. Nikki Haley, his former UN ambassador, questioned why India was penalised for oil purchases from Russia while China — a far bigger buyer — avoided similar sanctions. Former National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned that such measures risked pushing India closer to China. The rift has also raised questions about the future of the Quad coalition — comprising India, the US, Japan and Australia — which was revived in 2017 to counter China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, meanwhile, reiterated that India would not bow to external pressure. “India will neither bow down nor appear weak, but will strive to capture new markets,” he said last week.
