Barricading Dispute Causes Temporary Halt to Durga Immersion
Damoh | October 20, 2026 - A heated exchange occurred between municipal officials and members of the Railway Station Durgotsav Committee at Phutera Pond in Damoh over barricading arrangements during the immersion of Durga idols. This dispute temporarily disrupted the immersion process, creating a tense atmosphere during the festivities.
Sources indicate the dispute began when committee officials clashed with the Chief Municipal Officer (CMO), Rajendra Singh Lodhi, regarding the barricading setup. Committee members accused the CMO of misbehavior, while the CMO claimed the committee members were threatening him. The prolonged argument caused distress to the devotees and others gathered for the immersion.
Tensions at Immersion Site Resolved
A large number of devotees had gathered at Phutera Pond, a crucial site for idol immersion, following Durga Puja. Disagreements arose between the committee and the municipality concerning the barricading implemented at the immersion site. Committee members alleged the municipality's arrangements were inadequate and causing inconvenience to devotees, whereas administrative officials maintained they were necessary for crowd and security control.
Immersion Resumes Smoothly After Mediation
The immersion process was completely halted for some time due to the heated debate and accusations between both parties, leading to a tense environment. However, considering the seriousness of the situation, efforts were made to mediate between the administration and the committee. After persuasion from various parties, the impasse was finally resolved, and the dispute was settled. Subsequently, the immersion of Durga idols resumed, and all idols were safely immersed in the pond.
The local administration has emphasized the need for better coordination and collaboration between festival committees and the municipality to prevent such incidents in the future, ensuring peace during cultural events and avoiding any inconvenience to devotees.
